I'm rebuiling front end. The lock washers on the eight or so bolts that hold the spindle to the knuckle look a little flat. Can I us grade 8 or are they something special?

Wouldn't worry about it, as long as the fasteners are properly installed and torqued, the "locking" function is useless. If the fasteners need to be replaced, would get the proper ones.

The lockwashers are meant to maintain the torque applied, similar to Loctite. Their function is to mitigate the vibration induced "loosening" over time. It's far worse off road than on, but how much really depends on your frequency of use, condition of roads, speed, etc.

Having said that, automotive fasteners are subjected to a far greater scrutiny during and after manufacture than hardware store grade material (lawyers aren't completely useless). These are really cheap. I'd recommend buying OEM and installing them, either now, or as soon as you can. Consider it insurance.

That maybe what they were designed to do, but are pretty useless at actually doing it.

For what? By the time that the fastener is loose enough for a lock washer to do any good, the spindle is going to fall of.

The lock washer's supposed to maintain tension on the threads so that they don't loosen due to vibration.

Don't hate me, I didn't come up with the idea.
