Trying to get an idea of what could be going wrong with my speedometer. It either works after I start the engine or it doesn't. Thought it could be the speedometer sensor but I am getting seed reading using a scangauge. Any thoughts?

pull the black bezel surround off ( 2 screws at the top) snaps on at the bottom you will see a large screw on each side tighten these 2 screws.... it will feel like they have stripped but you can not over tighten by design... you can do this while driving... the speedo I believe is controlled by the screw toward the pass side... you might have to unscrew some and then re-tighten... 99% of the time when this happens it's just a bad connection to the harness/gauge cluster... those 2 screws pull the harness to the cluster for the proper connection

Looked like it worked and was pretty happy for 5 cranks. 6th went back to no reading then 7 and 8 were fine. Loose connection still? What was the issue the 1% of the time?

those connections are funny... you can pull the cluster spray the connections with some electoClean or similar contact clean product... every time i have removed my cluster I have an issue with something (but i love my blue led bulbs for the dash lights) if that fixed it for a second... then chances are it is still a bad connection... each time I drive i have a 50/50 chance of the D lighting up or not... what I HATE is that I can not get my oil pressure gauge to function... since i did install an engine in my cruiser it's just something that i'd LIKE to monitor.... and at 306k miles it is the only thing that does not function and it bugs me... for my speedo i had to turn the screw as i drove and quit turning when it functioned... good luck
