Speedo and Speed Sensor fluid caused by tranny/t-case seal

This seems odd to me, this reddish fluid in the speedometer cable and speedo casing, what is it and does it belong here?
I checked the other end of the cable, where it goes into the transfer case and it seems fine, no red fluid on the cable or in the transfer case.

Would this affect the speed sensor at all?

The good news is your speedo is well lubed. The bad new is either you are leaking ATF into the t-case or someone filled up you t-case with ATF. The speedo drive is pumping oil up the cable. Pull the fill plug on t-case to check for over full condition. If oil pours out you have a seal problem.

Let the fun begin

Thanks Dyno,

Looks like I have a seal problem, opened the filler plug and whalla fluid everywhere.

I'll start searching mud to find a solution but any pointers would be appreciated. I assume I have to drop the t-case and replace the seal, is it that straight forward?

Thanks Jeff

Was it red (ATF)? you are supposed to have 90w gear oil in the t case.

You do have to disassemble the t-case to put the new seal in. It is not hard but it does take time. It is easier to do with the trans removed from the truck but it is not 100% necessary. The fj62 has a o ring and a seal it is slightly different from the fj60 (Manual) trans to t-case connection. If you seach you will find a bunch of other tips too.

It looked the normal clear/yellowish color of gear oil. Man, I didn't realize that I had to disassemble the t-case to do this until I read your post and others, and then the FSM.
The tranny and t-case were rebuilt about 10k ago but since then I put a new engine in, I must have jockeyed it around too much.

Transmission breather hose

Would a clogged breather hose on the transmission cause pressure to build up and push the fluid into the t-case?

Please say yes and let be my problem. :)

yes...

but the seal is compromised now. Fixing the breather tube may or may not fix the problem.

OK, I guess I should I consider it undrivable for now so I don't ruin the tranny?

Any opinions on what is easier, to drop the transmission or go in through the transfer case? If I drop the transmission do I still have to disassemble the T-case?

By the way I have never dove into a transfer case before.

Thanks jeff
