Went to Advanced Auto and asked if they had a K&N filter in stock and as usual the answer was "have to order it, cost is $48.99." The guy did say they had the Spectre air filter for half the price and its basically the same thing so I said what the H and bought one. Part number RS 8918 and here are a couple of pics:

Out of the bag, pre oiled and ready to install

Installed, bit tighter fit than stock paper filter

According to the tech at Spectre, ya treat it just like a K&N and it does come with a lifetime warranty.

Im getting about 16.2 mpg on hwy now, before install, and just cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body intake so it will be interesting to see how mpg is affected.

Heading out to Colorado later today so I should get a decent comparison. Ill post up the results later.

Generally speaking, K&N oiled filters are a downgrade. If this is anything like the K&N, I'd put the OEM filter back in.

Otherwise, your next post will be asking how to clean your TB and MAF. ;)

I have run a K&N without issue for years, the trick is to not over oil and let it dry. I clean the MAF sensor and TB as regular maintenance.

I guess it's better than painting your hubcaps red, or asking if you really need to replace a body mount bolt.

Gottagetone, fair enough. My take is the K&N may or may not flow better but I'm convinced the OEM style air filter, filters dirt better. And with an off-road vehicle, I think that deserves higher priority.

Agreed on the dirt thing, that is a concern especially around here. I will post up MPG results and watch the intake to see how that goes as well.

I cleaned the TB yesterday and think it was the first time it had ever been cleaned...it was nasty!!

On my old XR we used to use panty hose around the air filter in really dusty stuff. Worked well.

You know you want make a special run to the mall for one.

Love the approach your taking here with this mod. Anxiously awaiting your results.

Sorry to ask, but what is TB? (I'm sure it's not the disease).

I've been running the K&N filter for about 3-4 years now and have had no issues. But just the same, I have not gone much on dusty off the beaten track, more of highway cruisin. If I go more off road, I'd probably reconsider and go back to oem for better filtration. I think the K&N filter is too thin especially for dusty tracks.

TB=Throttle Body

Also Tom Brady. Go Pats!

I put the dry 100,000 mile AMSOIL oem replacement in my LX and it works great. Like any of them I need to pull it out every now and then and blow some air across it or beat it to knock loose some dust if traveling dusty roads a lot....but it seals very well and the area behind filter remains clean. Best of all, no oiling needed so I dont have to worry about too much oil and affecting MAS or too little and particles getting through to engine....

2nd partial tank, filling up at half tank cuz we are rolling into New Mexico, and got 16.6 mpg...not bad. Once we hit I-40 the mpg will surely drop, the speed limit goes to 80 and so do I.

So overall no real improvement so far. Interesting. Keep us posted as more data presents itself.
