In my 99 the stereo isnt really the greatest. I think my 02 4runner was better. I have to take the door panels off to work on my locks and was thinking about changing the speakers. Does anybody know what size are in there? Any recommendations? Will it sound better or is it just the head or amp thats crappy?

Thanks,
BC

that's a good question. Hopefully someone knows more about this subject, cuz I was thinking I'd like to change out my amp too. Would changing out the amp require major rewiring or anything, if I were to just change out the amp? What if I changed out the speakers too? I feel as though I have to turn up the volume too high just to hear something at audible levels.

In a 99 cruiser the stock radio/cd player sends out a weak signal to a stock amp. The amp ups the signal and sends it to the speakers. The amp is pretty weak, so people can't blow the factory speakers from being dumb. I have an aftermarket headunit, which makes the stock speakers sound much better. In order to use the aftermarket head unit the factory amp had to be bypassed, as the head unit has an amp in it allready. In my opnion just replacing the speakers won't do much as they will still be limited by the Toyota amp. I currently still have all the stock speakers and added a sub. This works perfect, because lows are where the stock speakers aren't very good.

So I'd suggest a new head unit, and if money allows a sub or upgrade speakers. A good sound system starts at the source, the head unit.

As for speaker size www.crutchfield.com has a list of speaker sizes for most car/truck models.
