Gents,

I've got a problem with my truck that just crept on me when the wife was driving my truck (figures). The CEL came on and she said the truck was hesitating to accelerate and would rumble unevenly at idle. She got it home and it was worse than I thought. It's barely driveable at all.

I think at the minimum I probably need new plugs, wires and maybe rotor service. I am HOPING that's all that I need...but I'm prepared for the worst (mentally)

Anyway, would any of you fine gentlemen be willing to assist with the swap for a case of your favorite brew and some BBQ from Jim N Nicks?

You're timing is bad as those with the skillset you need are likely headed to URE tomorrow or Saturday mornnig. If you were to get the parts and drive it to URE on Saturday, you might find some guys willing to work on it between libations before or after dinner.

Nolan if you can get it to Cruisin the carolinas on Saturday morning I could help you while i'm on pig watching duty.

Or if can wait till next week I could help you one day/night then.

Thanks guys. Do you think it's safe to drive? There is a LOT of hesitation and shaking when I give it any gas. This is somewhat similar to what happened in '04 when the head gasket blew on a trail, but now the truck sees no offroad miles and almost no highway miles, so I don't think that's the issue...but I could be wrong. I've had some say it does sound like plugs and others say it isn't.

lt1 (or someone else), are you far from Jim N Nicks? Just wanted to get the opinion of someone who has a clue, not some service tech from NAPA.

I don't know where that is sorry.... I live by the white water center

It sounds like it could be the spark plugs.... had the same symptoms on my sisters 91 yota truck and it was a bad wire.

As far as could you drive it.... really only you could say that.... most likely it is only runningon 5 cylinders..... I could swing by next week to take a look.

If you are an ONSC member use the club discount at Scott Clark to get new plugs/wires cap and rotor. If you aren't a club member it would still save you money to pay for membership and use the club discount

There is an easy test to see if you got bad plugs / wires. Just as easy to do that one day / night. I had a 22r that had some bad plug wires and the light show under the hood at night was great.

Nice, I am an ONSC member so I will call them up for parts. I'll open the hood once it gets dark and see if I see any light leakage...I sure hope it's just plugs and wires.

I will let you know what I discover over the weekend and likely take you up on your offer to meet next week to look at it.

Thanks!

You can pull the wires off one at a time while running and see if it changes the idle. If not, probably have another issue on your hands.

I went out the other night to check out the sparkplug situation and the CEL light came on within a few seconds of cranking the truck. Took it to a local shop and had them pull the code and it was indeed reporting misfires. Pulling the spark plugs showed that they were very corroded and caked with oil. It was determined that the valve gasket seals were shot and needed to be replaced, as evidenced by the dried oil that was all over the lower front side of the block.

I just went ahead and had the valve gaskets and plugs done at a local shop. Set me back almost 200 bones for the parts and almost 300 for the labor. Ouch. But at least the truck is happy again and that's all the matters.
