for those with the stock spare tire winch: Lubricate and cycle the mechanism occaisionally....I wanted to drop the spare to aid in installing a borrowed reciever hitch....the damn thing was seized. I ended up using a sawsall to get the darn thing out of the way. Better in my driveway than on the side of some road with a flat tire....trying to do math and angling for rear bumper tire carrier...the stock spare tire winch just wasn;t designed with the new England winter and salt in mind....

I found out mine had seized on a trail in Moab. I actually bent the rod trying to lower it -- ended up borrowing a can of spray lube from a friend to free it up.

I had had the spare out at home the weekend before the trip!

Takaway: I now have a can of spray lube in my trail toolkit. :)

My rig has always been a Tulsa, OK rig, and it was froze too. a little lube, and going up and down and up and down, it finally broke free.
