Spare Tire Relocation

Has anyone relocated their spare tire to the roof rack. I have a stock rack and the rear door seems to feel like the spare tire is wearing out the hinge. I open and close mine a lot as i have a dog and we go to work together everyday. I have the TRD spare rim with the BFG All Terrain and i gotta admit these are pretty heavy. I want to relocate it to the roof but i am not sure of the best way to secure it and im also a little worried about drag and wind noise. any feedback out there......thanx in advance.

Kamar has a cool rear bumper/tire relocator hinge that mounts to the bumper and gets the weight off the door. Looks beefy too,

Have you thought about how hard/awkard its going to be to take that on and off if you need to use it?

You seem to forget those are Toyota hinges and like everything else on the vehicle they are designed to last. I would think it would cost more money buying the stuff you need to mount the spare up their then it would to replace those hinges if for some bizarre reason they fail.
Keep in mine too that you always want to keep the center of gravity low on an SUV whether on the road or off, putting a heavy ass tire up their is going to increase the body roll on turns.
One last thing and the most important, the FJ looks pretty fugly with out that spare tire on the back

Spare tire issue

I think a spare tire on the roof is a bad idea becuase when we roll the FJ it will most likely damage your brand new never used spare tire.

Roof = bad idea. Tires are heavy, hard on your back, and adds top heaviness.

Get the Kaymar rear bumper when it comes out. I am. The rear door hinges on my FJ are great, even after over 1 years use no signs of trouble.

MAN-A-FRE will have the Kaymar bumper after the first of the year. It's an extremely well-built unit. I'm buying one for my FJ.

As to the rooftop mount:

With a beadlock wheel & a 305, the darned thing weighs about 150 pounds.

Putting it on the roof raises the center of gravity and while getting it up there may be a challenge, getting it down when you're off camber and broken down might be a real problem.

Yeah bro I've been there many time since I was a little kid.
I've always called Lucerne Valley, thats where Iwent a couple years ago with my brother and dad to help pit for my dads buddy.
We're talking about going this year again, or 2008. We should go.
