I keep hearing what sounds like a compressor kicking on ever once in a while, mostly after I get on my brakes hard. Also notice when I hit the brakes they feel soft until I pump them once. Any ideas what this could be? Also noticed while I'm sitting at idle it kicks on about every minute

Sounds like your brake pump. If it is loud and weak, it could be on its way out.

Brake booster pump?

Are those hard to change out?

Search "double pump" and "brake pedal height" and you'll find a lot of info.

IIRC, adjusting the brake pedal height has solved the double pump for some people, but there are various opinions on the risk/reward of that approach.

I've been told the pump sound is normal operation, but that probably depends on the actual sound.

This almost sounds like a small jackhammer or hammer drill drilling into concrete block. You can feel the vibration in the brake pedal. I have another 98 100 series and it's never done that.

They're pretty damn proud of those pumps.

Yup. Go pull a good one out of a wrecked 4th gen T4R and replace. I think they also put the same pump in a lot of different models at the time.

About scared to get a used one. Apparently it's a pretty common problem. This is my 4th 100 series and Ive never had a problem before.

I don't think it's as common as it appears to be... I would trust a lower mileage used pump.
