Sound from engine?

Occasionally I hear a sound that seems to come from the drivers side of the engine. I've noticed it when I first start driving after starting up (though not every time) and I noticed it when driving up a very steep hill. The sound is like a small electrical motor briefly running for a couple seconds.

Any ideas what this might be? It could be something just doing its job.

OK, so is it it normal to hear this pump or is it something I need to worry about? When does it normally kick in when just doing its job?

It kicks in occasionally. Nothing to worry about. It is just doing what it is supposed to.
