Last Saturday I decided take my cruiser and drive a friend to the farms in the northern parts of Kuwait! After taking care of business I decided to drive to my uncle's farm where we fell upon his 100 series cruiser! Since my friend have a 100 series Lexus he was quite intrigued by the snorkel, brush guard, and rear bumper!

I called my uncle up and told him that we were by his cruiser and he was impressed! Next thing I know he starts talking about how the radio he has in the helped him out and that I should get one! I told him that I would like one but it would be a hassle to get the permits to have one!

To my amazement my uncle told me that if I really wanted one and I was serious about it that I should talk to him! Without thinking I said, "I want one!" He then hands me the Icom IC-V8000!

looks more like a FRS/GMRS unit than a CB...

anyway, won't you need a license etc to transmit on that ICOM?

I don't know about Kuwait. Thats a two meter I beleive. In the US you need a ham radio permit. I have one similar to that thats going to go in mine eventually. Two meter is far superior to CB IMO.

I think you are right on the whole GMRS thing! As for the license, I do need to get one so to say but I won't!

You need a permit to have them but I don't think I'll be getting one since they usually don't check the inside of the cruiser!

And there is a whole structure for using these things, with rules saying that you have to state your license call sign every 10 mins when you transmit, plus other hams (amateur radio operators) will give you a hard time if you don't have a license. And the fines are severe if you transmit without a license if not in a major emergency.

But I imagine things may be a bit looser in other parts of the world...

What about police looking for a little "extra cash" to let something like a radio without a permit slide? I have had it happen in mexico a couple times. Kuwait could be different though.

I don't know how bribery works here! Haven't heard of anything like that actually occurring!

If you plan to use your Icom IC-V8000 Get a license, at least for VHF, it's better than being a pirate

I'm licensed for all bands (VHF/UHF/HF) which might take you a long time to do (approx. 2 months). but for only VHF it's a 5 day training session then a test. I believe they will start one soon for VHF so if you are interested call me and I'll hook you up.

As for the Icom V-8000 most the ones in Kuwait are Chinese replicas and not originals so be careful. Also, don't use a cigarette lighter adapter like some people do or you'll risk a small electrical fire in your truck since you can push 75 watts with this transmitter.

If I were you, I'd do this the right way. Learn, sit for the test and get your VHF license. Or even better get licensed for all bands

Hey! I would like to take you up on the whole training thing! I've been trying to figure it out and it's way too complicated! My uncle got this one on his trip to Japan! I don't think he would get a replica! I have pics of his cruiser I need to post up in the 100 series forum!

BTW, I went by the dealership to take a look at your cruiser!

as far as the cig lighter go, look up the current draw specs (on the web if no manual). Then compare to the fuse on the cig lighter, typically 10-15A. Probably OK, even if you transmit 75W.

I believe the cig lighter is typically fused only on the positive lead. If for some reason power is sent back through the negative lead to the transmitter then you are at risk. The negative fuse of the IC-V8000 is now behind the cig lighter socket and only protects your transmitter not your car. The amps when transmitting at 75W are 15A btw for that model. That's living on the edge for most cig lighter adapters. I could be wrong though, my electrical background isn't that great


A good reason not to connect it to the cigarette lighter socket is found in the manual (page 5)

"NOTE: DO NOT use a cigarette lighter socket as a power source when operating in a vehicle. The plug may cause voltage drops and ignition noise may be superimposed onto transmit or receive audio."
