I am thinking of making a weldernator and wonder if I can get away with yanking off my smog pump. I have a 91 fj80...do I still have to keep all that emission stuff intact for inspection? and which alternator would be a best fit /option .
anyone else considered this ?

I've been failed in my '78 FJ40 for missing smog equipment, in Wake County. It varies greatly by where you are, but by law, it will result in a fail.

thats what i figured....thanx Ramon

Ramon you failed in your 78? what are you missing? Got me worried about passing inspection since im getting close to that time.

I doubt you have much to worry about Adam. Whole different world down there brotha.

From what i've heard for NC before I even moved here. The two big cities/counties, Raleigh and Charlotte you might get failed for some BS like that. Go out into the country and they won't care. I haven't had my smog pump on since I moved here.

Getting it inspected in another county than you live in won't help. As in Wake, if I drive to an outlying county, I'd still have to make it comply with Wake's standard.

When it comes to simply the "visual" inspection, that could be done in another county where some mechanics might not know, understand or care about the specifics of the vehicles "factory" smog equipment.

At least, thats my understanding of the way things work in this state...

You're right Jerry - I'm pretty sure all 100 NC Counties now have the same regs, it's just how well the Inspectors check that still varies. Luckily for me, I've got two more years to worry about that b/f the '78 will be past the 35-year exception. :)

All counties do have the same laws. The point is that only the major cities garages actually follow them to the T. Out in the country you will be passed no problem.
If it ever is a problem it takes all of 5 minutes to reinstall the pump on a 3FE 80

If you go to the right garage, none of this is a worry. I have my ghetto EGR resistor w/ white electrical tape and vaccum lines looped back to origin and the garage doesn't care. And this shop ain't in the country either.
