I recently made a costom power steering line from my pump to my steering box. I soldered a new galvinized line ( generic brake line/pipe) to my banjo fitting that attaches to my pump. It worked fine for about month, now I have a minor leak, which seems to be coming from my soldering job. I wonder would silver solder be better, was the galvinized line no good, or just a poor soldering job? Any input would be appreciated.

I used a 3/8 line to my 10mm (i think it was 10mm) banjo, was a little loose but I was able to drill another 4mm deeper into the banjo for a snug fit.

Thanks
Joel

Joel,

The best option would have been to have a custom power steering hose made. Many auto parts will have hydraulic fittings and crimpers to make custom hoses. Cost should be around $20 to $25.

The only problem is that I live in a small town, and all the local parts guys seem to deal with standard/imperial rather than metric. Though I wonder how a standard banjo would fit, it would be a hair smaller but it could do the trick.

thanks
Joel.

What part is smaller? Is it the hole for the fluid to go through? Can you drill it out to make it bigger?
I would not think it would have to be the exact size since it will be sealed with some copper washers.

Honestly not to sure if the banjo is a little smaller, have to pick one up first, but would mate better with my 3/8 line. As for fitting, I was thinking along the same lines as you had mentioned Charles.

Cheers
Joel.

silver solder is a lot stronger or you can braze it. what kind of joint is it that you soldered? slip fit , butt joint this is were you get the strength. if you can make it a slip fit it would work the best.

Well I pulled the power steering line apart the other day, there doesn't seem to be a good way to drain, other than all over the place. Cleaned and preped the banjo, then soldered back together again with silver solder. With a oxy/accet mix the material had to be glowing bright red to melt. Back together and all is well :D.

The joint is a slip fit, with the metal line sliding into the banjo.

Thanks
Joel.
