SoCal paint shop recommendation ???

Hi folks:

Searched through the FAQ and past paint & body threads, but couldn't find the answer to this question. My apologies if its been addressed before...

I'm considering buying an fj40 in good mechanical shape, but is in serious need of a good paint job and perhaps some minor surface rust stripping, sanding. Does anyone know a good body/paint shop in Los Angeles that can do a thorough and nice-looking job without charging me an arm and a leg? I would like the inside of the tub and engine compartment done as well as the exterior. I know they'd have to remove the seats and pull the engine (for an extra charge), but would they need to strip the dash too?

I visited a shop that looked "iffy" in North Hollywood but that had come highly recommended and they quoted me $10,000. I thought that seemed outrageously high, as I am only spending $5000 on the fj40 truck itself. I was hoping I might be able to get a quality job for around $3000, but don't know if that's an unreasonable expectation.

Would appreciate any leads on good paint shops in L.A. and feedback as to whether or not a quality job can be done for that price. Please post here rather than send me an email, as I am a newby here and can only receive a handful of emails before the "in box" is clogged.

Many thanks,

Sean

Hi if you are in the area ttry a body shop in Simi Valley called Neewcastle motors, Los Angeles Ave at Tapo Canyon. Telephone 1 805 584 2282. ask for Cosmo, they do pretty fair work, and have the tub coated with Line X after and not by the same shop $300.00 for the tub. Enjoy

"Perhaps some surface rust?" Better make damn sure that's all it is or that 10K job will turn into 20K real fast. One of the big problems with paint now is the cost of the materials is astronomical. I am told everything is now 2 part, & as an example, a gallon of clear is now over $500. 10K for what you want done is not unreasonable. I did all my mechanicals, body work, rust repairs & prep myself. After all was said & done, if I had 20K, I woulda paid it to avoid all that work. I had it painted only at Phoenix Auto Body in the Fairfax district (L.A.) & it turned out pretty good.
