So, when can I get my diesel-hybrid LC or FJC?

Saw this article about diesel-hybrid off-road vehicles by Jeep and Land Rover...

"The future of off-roading looks electric"

...on the MSNBC website. It even mentions a "bio-diesel" approved hybrid motor in the LR

Toyota's hybrid technology (in the Prius, etc.) is way ahead of anyone else's... And they sell excellent diesels in LC's all over the rest of the world...

So, "where's the (diesel-hybrid) love" for the Land Cruiser, Toyota? ;p

(I have to admit, one of the things I miss with my diesel on the trail is even the relative quiet of a gas motor. Imagine a hybrid on electric-only drive...) :steer:

Screw the hybrid. I want diesel-electric. (Think locomotive.) Diesel generator under the hood with electric diffs or electric motors at each wheel. Most efficient design possible wit a diesel.

I'd hate to cross water with one of those though....

Never had a fish tank, huh? Been on a cruise ship? :)

There are fully sealed, brushless electric motors that work just fine under water.
The generator section might have to be sealed and the breather tied into the snorkel. And they can be water cooled, too, I think.
It's not impossible.

And if you think a straight diesel's got bottom-end torque, think about that diesel-electric locomotive starting a 200 car coal-train... on a grade, no less.

:D

only restriction is size and weight. I've built diesel-electric boats and thats a lotta weight - no transmissions needed tho'...

EPA might be a hurdle, too.
You can use a smaller diesel. No need for a Detroit 20 cyl. 4 cylinders should do. Like the old Hilux motor. Add a turbo and it should be able to turn a big enough generator.

i'm excited about the new ground the GM volt will be leading upon its release, unfortunately the first car is just a sporty 2 seat type, but a sedan will follow suit shortly i bet. when i first heard about the hybrids for consumers, this is what i thought it was, instead they copped out, but its still a step in the right direction and consumers buying the numbers of hybrids now are showing it which is prolly a big reason GM went forward with the volt.
