After typing this post, I've realized I've once again written a small novel. The short version is; I would like to remedy a rough top coat which has been clear coated by maybe sanding. These are aluminum wheels I painted black 2 days ago. If you would like more details, read the novel below.
I recently painted my wheels. They were nothing special to begin with, and are in line to be replaced in the future. I figured they're worth the cost of some spray paint, but not much more. If they were worth keeping, I would have powder coated them.
I chose the paint product based on reviews, and prepped the wheels properly. I think my problem came with my top coat. I used a self etching primer which I sanded before the top coat. The top coat just seemed lousy to me. It came out in spurts and had very poor coverage, regardless of how much was used, how well shaken, and how well cleaned the orifice was. It began to get really jagged and rough on my smoothly prepped and sanded surfaces, and worsened with each layer. Unfortunately it took 4 layers to get full coverage since it came out spattering like a paintgun. I've read that the particles in spray paint can wind up "on end" rather than lying flat like they should. But I also read that applying the clear coat will remedy this. Well it didn't. Now I've got glossy black wheels with very rough rather than smooth finish. It just looks very amateur. I'm wondering whether I could have sanded the top coat before clear coating. I didn't because A) it doesn't say you can, and B) I've done it in the past and it winds up chalky and then you just clear coat your chalky black.
