A couple weeks ago after we had the storms I went up to Payson, but there is no snow up there now.

cant play at snowbowl :( I just checked the weather for the same reasons and even the play area in Flag has closed.

You can watch this camera to get a idea of how much snow you'll find at the rim. http://az511.com/hcrsweb/files/rwisCam522008.html Currently not much snow. North of Payson on highway 87 they was a snow play area called Snitch Hook. That has been closed for years. Thought it was because of liability but heard from the locals up north it's because of the cleanup costs. With all the budget cuts to the forest service can't afford the cleanup. There is a area north of that still popular for snow play. Guessing it's around five miles south of Clint's Well on 87. A couple miles north of the 300 FS road you go down a big hill. In the valley at the bottom there are two FS roads on the left sides. Both these roads are closed but because it's in a valley these roads go up hill. First road is 616 and not sure how far you have to walk in but always see car parked there on weekends when there is snow. The second road use to go down the valley but has been closed and climbs up right off the highway. This one has a area to park. It's not uncommon to see the 300 road and this one having tents after a fresh snow which I believe is Boy Scouts earning a winter camping badge.

Making progress.

Not looking like a good winter for snow in the high country. Once it snowed need to watch the temperatures. Not uncommon for the temperature to be in the high forties with in a couple of days. If just a few inches areas exposed to sun melts pretty quickly.

I'm hoping once we're able to live at our home up north most the time we start having winters with more snow. Not sure of the winter time road closures south of the rim but in our area we are right at the edge of the road closures at the north end. Still a few miles of pine forest before dropping into the shrub pines. There is nothing like driving in the forest on virgin snow. Not a bad area to try out winter camping.

So was that round trip or just one way? Where di you end up going. Coming from Scottsdale the 300 rim road might be open as long as it's paved off the highway 260 end. Anyone know? While the highway 87 end climbs to 8,000' pretty quickly it's gated because it not paved at on that side.

I like snow pictures.

There is also a down side to snow. Really need to get my snowplow hooked up to a 40. Doesn't do me any good sitting in my garage in the valley.

I hate the city snow plow, they always leave a huge pile at the end of the driveway in the middle of the night. Wake up in the morning and shovel again.

It was round trip. We went to Flagstaff, Arizona Snowbowl.

When I was younger I would head up to Flagstaff area in the morning, cut a Christmas tree and then drive back the same day. This was with my stock 68 FJ40. That made for a long day. Next time I would recommend driving up highway 87 and the head to Flagstaff at Clint's Well. Nicer drive and possible may find snow around the 300 road which is about 7,500'. Just be careful of elk. hopefully most are at lower elevations but you never know, this winter has been pretty mild. I did who on the news tonight Flagstaff has received more snow this winter than Fargo.

A number of years ago we had a great driver, they use a street grader and just before he passed the driveway he would straighten the blade so he didn't leave a pile in front the driveways. New driver not only doesn't straighten the blade our driveway is on the left side at the end of a long Cul-de-sac. He just drives up the right side and pushes all the snow around to the left side in front of our drive. One thing I do like about Northern Arizona is not near as cold further north. Shoveling snow with just a light jacket on is not uncommon.

Lake Mary road has become my 'go to' route to shuttle the kid back and forth from NAU. Much more scenic and alot safer than I-17 imo. Well worth the extra hour.
