So the :princess: and I were discussing an (official) JSC snow wheeling trip, and thinking about some different areas out toward the Klamath area.

One area we looked at was Aspen Lake (and lake is a most generous term, despite what you see on Google Maps :p ). It's basically a seasonal lake, when we looked at it, it was completely and utterly dry as far as we could see.

The advantage to it is that it's huge. I mean very large. Bigger than Lake of the Woods or Howard Prairie. I suppose a picture says a thousand words....

Google Maps

The question is, what are you guys looking for in a wheeling trip? This would be a great spot to snowmobile (or use quads, if you have some paddle wheels), but not so much for an actual "wheeling" trip. Unless we want to do snow drag strip tracks or something..... :hmm:

I think it'd be cool to have an official snow trip, and something like this might fit the bill. :meh:

Thoughts?

Obviously pre-planning a snow wheeling trip is questionable. Snow, no snow, wet snow, fresh snow, frozen snow? Big variables there. IMO it's best to hit the first real dumping so you don't have the frozen base and it's usually easier to power thru the deep powder. The snow trips I plan are only days ahead of time watching weather reports and such. This is the year we really plan on doing some snow camping too, we have been talking and now it's time to walk the walk so to say.

Obviously we can't plan on everything, but I think we can pretty much pick a date where there will be snow in the area. Might be up on the hill towards Crater Lake, but we can find it. :D

If we go up high enough we can definitely hit snow, and should be able to hit decent snow. Perfect snow? Probably not, but I'm not convinced we can't plan a trip.

Maybe we need to move up in elevation, and think up towards John's Peak, or Crater Lake. No issues with snow there!

I think that there are people who would love to snow camp, but don't necessarily have the opportunity to. Why not provide that?

Yup! Pre planning snow wheelin' is not really plausible. We could plan where we intend to go, and maybe which month we wish to do it, but the date can't be nailed down if we want good wheelin'.
I'm very much looking forward to camping :grinpimp:

x2 Planning JSC snow run cool. Planning a specific weekend negative. Shooting for early season when we start to get some good stuff cool. Just needs to be deep enough so I get some good back country ski turns in :flipoff2: ;)

I'm all up for snow wheeling when the time comes (Although I hate chains, $$$$$) Aspen Lake really is a seaonal lake and can get 2-3 feet of water in it (more of a marsh really). You'd be outta luck if you hit the thing after the first dump. There are loads of roads to go bashing around on all through that area though. It be nice to have everyone over on this side for a run like that.

I like the idea of playing your in your neck of the woods. Trails? camping? spots to hit up? :D

What do you mean out of luck after the first dump? Are you talking about rain, or snow?

There's a "camping" spot someone had on the "lake" itself. Mostly just an open area with a fire pit and a spot to turn around. Someone had been camping there, probably the folks who were 4-wheeling up there (saw lots of those tracks).
