Lost my air ram from the snorkel today. Might want to tighten your hose clamp some more. The wind was really high today. The pillar hides view from being able to see it. I still have my air ram on my FJ80 thats 10 years old, go figure.

That happened to me too! I ordered another one from Man-A-Fre and then one day I saw it on the side of the highway! It was a little scuffed up but otherwise undamaged. Make sure you tighten the hell out of the replacement head.
are they supposed to be mounted facing forward or backward? Do they act as a CAI?

They are supposed to be mounted facing foreword, but they can be spun around in heavy rain, or any other situation where you want to minimize the chance of sucking water, mud, or dust into the snorkel. Technically they do function as a CAI because they draw air so far from the engine compartment. However, you won't see or hear the performance gains seen with a CAI like the TRD or AFE. Airflow is less restricted with the CAI units than with the factory intake.

Thanks! Is there a huge gain on performance or mileage with a CAI? I mean is it a good return on investment? How about the headers? I had a 460 FORD in a motorhome - added Doug Thorley headers and got 50% better mileage. Went from 5 mpg to 7.5 mpg and lots more torque.

I think the CAI is well worth the money. Definite improvement in power and throttle response. Even better than that is the sound! I have the TRD CAI and it roars. From 3000 to 5000 it is sweet, sweet music. I wouldn't say it is a huge gain in performance but it is definitely noticeable and that isn't usually the case for a $350 mod. It didn't have much impact on my MPG. Only a slight improvement. I am running the JBA headers and I'm happy with them. You will get more performance gains out of the Thorley long tube headers, but they are not street legal. They are, however, bolt on so they can be swapped out with relative ease. The improvements to the Intake and exhaust really came together after I had a unichip installed and custom tuned. Now I'm getting the full potential out of all my mods. I don't know which mod produced x amount of power, but the setup I'm running now is considerably more power than a stock engine. The combo of the CAI, Headers, and performance exhaust sounds and feels really good when you give it juice. If you go with the DT long tubes, you'll also need the O2 sensor so your dash light doesn't go off.

Is the O2 sensor missing what makes the DT headers not street legal? I can weld in a threated adaptor to make them legal if that's the case.

Whoops, forgot to ask, If I install a chip, can I get the Idle speed down? Backingn out of a parking space or out of my shop is a bitch! Gotta keep stabbing the clutch and only half releasing it at that!

No it is illegal because you loose a couple catalytic converters and maybe pre cats too. The missing O2 sensor will cause your check engine light to come on all the time but URD sells a O2 simulator for 29.00 which will eliminate this problem. None of this is an issue with JBA because you don't loose any cats or anything. I don't know how big a deal it is that you aren't street legal. Here in the midwest we don't have any emissions inspections or anything like that. I don't know who would catch you or how you could get caught by running the long tubes unless you live in CALI. I don't know about the idle speed. Mine isn't really any higher since the chip went in. The Unichips are infinitely tunable so I'd assume you can have it custom tuned to do whatever you want as long as it is possible. We must be following the same thread line!! In the last thread I quoted you, I mentioned I like mud. Mud=Water and damaged Mass Air Sensor!! I considered the snorkel, but wondered if it would truly work in deep mud/water vs just water crossing. If so, what brand do you guys feel gives the most bang for the buck? This mod also requires cutting into the body correct? What am I looking at spending for the setup?
And what is this about the headers and long tubes? Maybe just the headers. With past vehicles I put long tubes in, I always say I will swap out the long tubes for my emission check. Every time though, I find convincing myself to pay off inspection centers to overlook the air polution less of a headache. Sorry, kinda not really, to all the tree huggers out there for my utter voluntary disregard to the so called "global warming" crisis

That 460 with todays technology would produce 10-12.5 out of the box but hey big blocks are thought of as hogs. Truely v6's are now producing for HP what big blocks were "rated at" in the early '70's.
