Snatch or Recovery Strap? (2 Viewers)

I don't have a winch yet but I will be getting 1 in the future. Having said that it's my understanding a snatch strap should not be used to extend a winch cable. My dilemma is I only want to have to buy a strap once(until it's wore out). Since I'll be getting a winch is it best for me to just get a recovery(static) strap & not a snatch(dynamic) strap? If recovery strap is it then ~20K lb. plenty? Specific brand w/out paying extra for the name? Thanks.

If you only want to buy one strap get a snatch strap and hope you don't need a winch extension. You can also get a true winch line extension if you want.

How heavy is your vehicle? A 2" (appx 20k) or a 3" (appx 30k) might be applicable.

Just checked out your site. My rig is light right now but will end up being <6,500lbs. I like your 2"x30'. Your 3"x30' is too heavy for me as I'd never weigh enough to actually get it to the point of stretching enough to benefit from the 'stretch' of it. Make sense?

These stretch 10% at break and yes, the more umph you put into it the more stretch, but also the closer you get to breaking the strap. How long before you get to 6500 lbs? What is your current weight? Depending on those things and how long it takes you to get your vehicle built out you might want to go with a 2" strap now and replace it down the line with a 3".

If you wanted only one strap Id go 3". Better for it not to stretch as much rather than break.

Or for 3x the stretch go with a kinetic rope.

When you break it, look into a bubba rope.

at 6000 lbs if your stuck up to the frame your truck will require about 18,000 lbs of force to extract it and a double line 10,000 lbs winch all exceed the strap capacity you bought.before bubba rope i never carried less than an 80,000 lbs strap because you never know what you will try to pull out .

80K lb. strap is just ridiculous. I've been offroading for 30 years & have NEVER needed anything even in the ballpark of that. I've had my Dodge dually 4 door 4wd diesel buried to the frame & had zero issues getting it out w/a 10K strap. I understand the over-strength concept(I'm a certified advanced rope rescue technician) but there comes to a point where it's unnecessarily overboard(like an 80K lb. strap for a 6K lb vehicle). W/a 25K lb strap my vehicle doesn't weigh enough, even buried to the frame, to get that strap to stretch therefore defeating the entire purpose of the concept. IF I break this strap w/my LC then I'll report back to this post & eat crow. Don't see it happening though. Common sense goes a long ways!!!! Thanks.

1 time you were stuck and your strap worked ive done hundreds of recoveries and sometimes 20 or 30 in a day at the local mud bash and by the end of the day my 80k is still pullin trucks out because its usually the only strap not broke .if a 17 k works for you by all means use it but they dont work for me so im staying with overkill

I'm surprised nobody has a few feet of stud-link anchor chain or surplus aircraft carrier landing cables...

The problem with a snatch strap being used with a winch is you effectively are hooking a rubber band to the winch cable and if something breaks that cable is going somewhere when the energy is released. Always use something on the cable to absorb that energy, heavy coat, floor mats work well for that try to strap them on so they don't fall off. That's any time you use any sort of winch with cable.

As far as extending the cable...more cable. It's cheap. $35 at harbor freight for a 65ft replacement cable.

If you want safety then ditch the steel cable, go with synthetic line and a synthetic line extension. Steel doesn't need any help recoiling - it will do that fine on its own.
