I need some guesses as to what would cause my 84 60 to smoke. It gives a good puff everytime I shift. It is not bad when ideling but slowly gets worse the longer it sits and runs. Is this most likely more than valve seals?

What color is the smoke?

Could be a few things

Black smoke.

Black usually signifies an overrich mixture. Can you duplicate the puff of smoke with the truck in neutral by running it up to say 2500 rpm and then pulling your foot off the accelerator?

My mistake, I asked around with guys who drive behind me and they tell me it is blue.

blue=burning oil. how many miles do you have on the engine?

203,000.

I would buy a compression guage for $25 and check your compression. It sounds like you may have some tired piston rings causing the smoke. Do a search on here for compression. There is a lot of good info on how to do it and what the numbers mean.

goodluck

Blue smoke is your engine oil being burned. Obviously this means oil is leaking into the combustion chamber. Causes could be worn piston rings, valves, or cylinder
