Its Baaaaaack!
if anyone remembers, i posted a "weird smoke smell" post a few weeks back, that i thought might have had something to do with a application of Seafoam.
then, i discovered a bit of plastic stuff, that might ( did) fall from the hole in my hood insulator.Tthis , i thought, would explain the on again off again smoke issue.
Cleaned up the manifold area with compressed air, and that was that, no smoke for a while.
well, today, when i went to pick up my kid from school, when i parked the truck, you would swear i had a burst water hose or something, seeing a cloud of smoke coming from under the hood. I quickly popped open the hood, and the last remains of the smoke was wafting up from between the air cleaner assembly and the top of the valve cover. this would seem to me that i STILL had some sort of S*** stuck on or near the manifold. I turned back on the engine, and sat looking at NOTHING for ten minutes..no smoke, no smell.
so...tonight it took off the whole air cleaner assembly, and inspected every damn thing i could find that might come in contact with something hot, and came up with only one thing ( see picture)
This appears to be the gasket that is at the manifold insulator, at the bottom of the hot air tube. about two inches of threads are ( were) sticking out around the elbow shaped tube the hot air tube atatches to, and the metal hood.why they put a gasket there i cant figure.
anyway...it seems to be so oversized that if frayed like hair, and its the ONLY EFFING thing that i can see that could be the cause of the smoke, because the frayed end touch the exhaust manifold.
its driving me nuts, especially since it comes and goes, and when i do see it, the minute i open the hood, it dissapates, even if i continue to run the engine.
i am totally stumped...my kids freaking out like the cars on fire, and the wife is giving me that "its an old truck, why dont you dump it" look.
trouble is..everything els works fine...runs like a champ, no vac leaks that might mean a melted hose...NOTHING!!!!!!
help!!!!!
