So I just picked up a '76 fj40 that the p/o had installed a Chevy small block (short water pump) into. The alternator mount leaves something to be desired, and there is no p/s.

I was thinking about heading over the the local junkyard and pulling some replacement parts - an alternator, p/s pump, and the mounting brackets.

Here's my question - what should I look for at the yard? Other parts that might be worth pulling? Any best year to pull from, or model (truck, 'burban, etc.) How about an entire serpentine setup? Best year?

Any tips would be appreciated - thanks from a 'noob.

If you do an entire serpentine setup- GET EVERYTHING!. Water pump, alternator, power steering pump, idlers, lower pulley, A/C compressor if there is one. Take your digital camera and take some pics of what it looked like before you took it apart. I never seem to quite remember exactly what the assembly should look like when I'm done. I'm usuallly standing there with "extra" bolts thinking "this can't be right".

Good luck, Luke

all the bolt on parts from a 4.3 6 cyclender are interchangable with the small block. These are usualy in the 4x4 s10 blazers, 4x4 s10 and sonomas. some of the full size chevys with the 6 cyclenders are compatable also.

If you don't end up with a serpentine Alan Grove makes a high passenger side alt bracket that is pretty neat, couple that with a head mount type II PS pump and it makes a pretty compact package.

linky?

Serp set up is pretty nice. You do need the reverse rotation water pump and fan. You also need a small block from the post 327 era with the holes in the front of the head.

The two cast aluminum brackets mount up nicer than the one big stamped steel piece. They look and work about as well as any after market job I've come across.

You might have to bypass the ammeter as the 100 amp alternators will fry the wiring.
