one of the rags listed a company that had a fix for the third gear popout issue in sm465s, but i can't for the life of my remember who the company was and not having third is really starting to suck. i thought it was something like power motive (but not them). does anybody know what company it is? i tried searching, but couldn't find anything.

not who i was thinking of, but that's what i'm looking for. thanks

please expand

Hi there... would you mind expanding on the "issue" a little? I think I experianced this but, not sure. I think I accidnetally "fixed" the issue but wanted to try and educate myself in case it ever happened again.

Thanks!

it pops out of third gear when on the throttle, going downhill, or towing...basically anytime you get some r's going.

Ahhh.. I had the opposite issue. Was shifting into 3rd and then everything locked up. Could not get the thing into any gear. Took out the stick started her up (was fixing some electical stuff), went to work the issue again, and wah lah! it started shifting again. Very strange.

Thanks for the info!

dtrain, not to hijack Ige's thread (and the only way I found to stop the popping out of gear was a rebuild) but; I had my 465 lock into 3rd, I pulled the stick out, saw that the rolled pins that hold the cap down had backed out. Pounded 'em back in and it worked fine for a month until the pins backed out again. Pounded 'em back in and put a big hose clamp around them to hold them in until I want them to come out. Fixed it.
Hijack over.

no need to worry about hijacking...it's another issue with the trans to watch for and a learned solution. haven't had that issue yet, but if i do, i know a fix.

so, is it the third/ fourth gear clutch hub slider thats responsible for either sticking (stuck in third) or slipping (slipping out of gear)? my sm420 got stuck in third after rebuilding it. it also was pretty sticky going into fourth, but never got stuck. i took it apart and swapped in a more smoothly operating clutch hub, and fixed the problem ( i think). i swapped the entire slider assembly so the keys match the hub. hopefully it won't slip out of gear now

what does that "torque lock" hub do?

there isn't actually a fourth gear...there's granny, first, second and third. i've always heard third gear was the issue with 465s. i do know a guy who has issues with second gear in his 420. do i got you confused now? :grinpimp:

point well taken. mine technically got stuck in second. it was tough to get into third as well.

Drivetrain.com look at part# 43 on the drawing. That's what mine needed to fix 3rd problems. They were also pretty cheap compared to GM dealer on parts.

Nuclearlemon...did you ever get this issue resolved? I have been debating this exact same issue on 465 I have on bench waiting to be installed. Both Novak and Driveline sell the 3rd gear and slider gear assembly kit ( $70 - $90) depending on who you buy from. Looks like same part, just different price. Also, replacing the snap rings between 3rd and 4th gear on counter shaft is supposed to be another cause of 3rd gear popping out.

Still have not decided as to just replace snap rings with spacer, replace this 3rd gear slider kit, or buy a whole damn rebuild kit and do the whole things. my deal is, as far as I know, the tranny may shift just fine. Have never had it in the rig.

between seven weeks of snow, a garage that i can't move in, a raffle vehicle being built at my place, refinancing the house, officer positions in clubs, remodeling a room, and training for a second job, i haven't had any time to touch any of my crap :frown:

hopefully this summer, but i think i'll deal with getting the pig running first.
