Please forgive me if my questions are idiotic.... I'm no transmission expert, not even a great mechanic... I'm just trying to get my tranny seal replaced since I was convinced pulling the tranny and replacing the seal was the smart thing to do while having the TC rebuilt.

I just pulled my SM420 and removed the Bearing Retainer in order to replace the Oil Lip Seal. A couple questions for the experts:

1) I noticed some horizonal movement outward in the clutch gear and bearing. Perhaps as much as 1/2". Of course, that is without the bearing retainer whose job, obviously, is to hold the bearing in place. Just want to be sure that is normal and is resolved when the retainer is bolted back up. I'm just surprised that there is that much play just pulling on the clutch gear.

2) Is it best to replace the Bearing Retainer GASKET too? If so, do you put the gasket on dry, or use a sealant? If a sealant, what kind?

3) Does anyone ever use any sealant in the recessed hole in the front of the transmission case? I don't recall what is behind that hole, but I thought I read that it is wise to plug it with a sealant to keep dirt out of the tranny.

Thanks for the advice. I did search for some answers but didn't find anything on any of this.

Ron
