So, after wheeling with all y'all at Durhamtown and the club annual at Ralph's, and seeing the crazy lines you guys were doing, its motivated me to start thinking/working on ways to make the 62 a much more capable trail rig.

i have a "build thread" in the 60 series section (linked here: my first toyota) but it pretty much turned into a photo album that everyone's lost interest in

My wish list:

-all new hoses under the hood
-upgraded headlight harness/HIDs
-sliders
-skid plate
-on board air tank
-ARB'd rear/compressor
-spartan in front
-More lift (SOA i wish or Shackle reversal or body lift even though i HATE BL's)
-4.56 regear for 35's
-beefier front bumper/used Warn and rear bumper/quarter panel protection
-Possibly an Exo-cage (just so i don't smash up the roof edges on trees)
-H55F 5-speed

...list is bound to grow, but this is already a nice chunk of change and seeing as how i spend money as fast as i make it, just getting these goodies are gonna take a lot of raffles, birthdays, workdays, and Christmases :)

For me, this stuff is kind of advanced so Ill take any advice y'all can share and any help you are willing to give. ill see if i can buy your time with :beer:BEER:beer:.
And don't be afraid if i PM you in the middle of the night with a very long detailed question, its cuz you have all the knowledge and i have none

obligatory first day home pic:

Currently (will try and keep this updated):

Just need to paint :)

Im thinking of getting an automatic locker soon for the rear. (Nick H, you know why haha.) ill probably move it forward once i choose to get an air locker.

My question is... are detroit or aussie lockers really that difficult to install? when i think of opening up the diff and fooling around with any of the gears... sounds fun, but it seems like i can screw some pretty important things up.

you guys could probably find a way to install this thing in an hour, in pitch black, out on the trails, with some twigs.

id like to save labor costs like usual, and learn to be self sufficient with the truck and this install seems like a reasonable next step for me.

I know a great place to get all your factory parts for this build. :D

indeed :), once i order those two o2 sensors from you (sometime this week), i can think of some other fun stuff that needs replacing.

I'm with ya. I'd like to learn how to do this myself. I'm planning on 4.56s and lockers at some point down the road.

Sounds like a good tech topic for a meeting

I'm running Lockrite in rear and Spartan in front.

Lunchbox lockers are easy to install, just have to take your time and mark everything in the differential really well while taking apart. Upon reassembly the diff MUST go back together exactly like it came apart, make sure the ring gear is in the same exact location as when disassembled so you don't screw with the R&P setup.

Of all of them...Aussie, Lockrite, etc..the Spartan was the easiest, so easy in fact i thought for sure I had done my wrong.

In my opinion, for a 90% street driven rig you're better off installing a selectable and not a LB locker. you're gonna chew up rear tires a lot faster than having the diff open on pavement.

Ill make sure to tell you when i do the install so we can see if you can come by and help if you want :)

yessir ill ask y'all for sure.

Spartan was the one i had my eye on because after doing a little research and watching some install videos, they too, talked about how easy they were to put in compared to other lunchbox lockers.

I'm hoping that the tires don't get torn up too badly, id probably only have it in the rear for a month or two.
OR
would installing the spartan up front be at all useful without a rear locker? Seems like it would just sort of doggy paddle itself around the trail?
OR
I could just wait until i have enough for both ARB and the Spartan...:crybaby:

I ran a front only locker on my last truck. It was great offroad.

The rear will push you where you don't want to go sometimes!!! Its lots of Fun. Then you'll be able to follow me on some crazy stuff:grinpimp: You are headed down a slippery slope$$$ Money will flow like fluid out a busted Transfercase!!! But I can't think of a better hobby to blow it on!!!:eek::eek:

I figure more controllable locked crawling is better than gassing it and praying I don't bounce into trees hahaha.
And I dont know if I should follow your extreme lines, I've seen the aftermath of some of your driving ;) (great avatar!)

I can't really weigh in on the lockers. I have an Aussie in the front of mine (HP 80 diff also) and welded rear. I really like the Aussie. But, I don't drive mine on the street. It's a little tricky to drive it with the rear constantly locked sometimes but that's part of the fun right?!

Met up with paul today. VERY glad I did :D
I CAN SEE AT NIGHT NOW!!!!!

Domes:

Rears:

Extras :D:

(stuck one in the corner and side lights... Very nice!)

Also got another nice surprise in the mail:

($32 OEM off ebay > $150 aftermarket)

I habve a locker in the rear only and would not put one in the front due to all the damage it can cause. I can go just about anywhere Ted and others can go.

Crap, wasn't really thinking about breaking stuff. So, i think I have finally made my decision... ARB'd rear only.
May be a few months though if I keep buying other little gadgets and things.
You guys know how to run compressors and air lines, right??? May be in a little over my head with that one haha.

Until I see your rig go up Colby Creek, Drive-shaft rock or V-Ditch at Ralph's or Sherwin Williams or Peckerwood in TC or Slippery Nipple at Durhamtown these are just words on a screen. :flipoff2:

HENDOG$$$ Trail as told by :princess:---Started Open Open like you, then Used Detroit Quick lock in Rear with Arbed front 35" BFGs. No More Money Allowed-Broke the Detroit:eek:. Put Arb in Back with open front--- Thus the comment about rear passing front all the time (V-8 Fool injected Short Wheelbase 40 dosen't help either ). I now have an ARB in the rear with a lightly used Aussie up front, Followed by a NUT behind the Wheel:steer::steer::steer: Followed with Broken Coarse Birfields,:bang: Followed by more money 30 Splines and Disc brake conversion  Still Breaking due to excessive Hard Core Wheeling Following Steve and Rob (In Over my Head Double Black Trail @ WindRock-Adventure)----Found a decent deal on some slightly used Longfields:)---Which leeds me to Hijacking this thread;p----We need a Locker installing Axle housing grinding weekend for the Mechanicaly (?) defiecent in the club. Whos in and where???:hillbilly: And on and on it goes like a cat chasing its tail!!!! Still Cheaper then Therapy:hmm: Save your money up-Drive some club members rigs to get a feel for what you like , then make up your mind!!!

Ill try and learn from your breaks  And the only problem with trying other trucks is can't drive stick, so who wants to teach me :lol::lol: Id definitely be in for a weekend learning day, that would be awesome!

You can attempt to drive my truck if you want. It's a little dodgy tho. Just ask Nick. :D
