Occasionally, when accelerating from a stop my 200 clunks. It could be wheel slop but that to IMHO is not acceptable. It definitely feels like it is coming from the rear end and it doesn't do it all the time, but I does seem like it happens more frequently when I accelerate aggresively.

I took it in Friday and the service manager claimed in not so many words that because there was no service bulletin that nothing was wrong. He did mention that he has heard the complaint before but I got the drift that he decided there was nothing wrong before a tech even touched the truck.

Anyone else having this issue?

Sounds like a familiar issue, try this thread for some help...

Not to be a forum Nazi, but please try searching.

This is a very common issue and there is even a TSB on it as Don pointed out.

In fact, the thread is stickied, so you don't even need to search!

I had read all of the previous threads and both my dealer and toyota usa told me there are no tsbs on it....

Send me a PM with your email and I will send you the TSB.

This clunking appears to be common issue with 4x4s.... I've heard several theories. One suggested an air pocket builds up in the drive shaft slip, causing binding, and upon release, the driveline clunks... greasing helps, the real fix may be increasing the slip stroke design...

On a Jeep we install a SYE and install a new driveshaft... the clunks go away.

Personally, I would have a custom JE Reel driveshaft made to replace the Toyota stock unit and see if that resolves the problem.

and BTW... my 2005 LC 100 clunked at 5000 miles and every GX470 that was ever sold clunked. I'm not familiar with the Toyota 200 transmisson output shaft design to comment on that, I say a good place to start is the driveshaft design.

Not only 4X4s, my diesel excursion 4X2 clunked. Ford said it was it's driving characteristic...

I hear ya.... it really doesn't matter if it's 4 wheel or 2 wheel drive... most trucks do this. Part of it is due to the driveline angle... the clunk is actually coming from the slip yoke... that's why we install slip yoke eliminators (SYE) on Jeeps - short wheel base to begin with, this provides for a slightly longer driveshaft with a slip-shaft, not a yoke.

I had clunk and what appeared to be a sloppy driveline on my 1991 XJ until I hit 120K miles... installed a 5" lift with a SYE, a good driveshaft and the clunk disappeared... the driveline is solid at 170K miles.

Several years ago when I was looking at GX470s the major complaint was the driveline clunk... guess what Lexus did, they installed replacement driveshafts with teflon coated splines.

Yes but after my initial concerns I got used to it. After 20,000 miles driving to and from the arctic and over the rocks in Canyonlands I figured it is probably OK. Having said that it will probably now break on my next long haul trip!!
