I performed a search on this topic, but I couldn't find anything that matched directly (I guess 'cause these trucks are generally so problem-free).....

Anyway, lately I have been experiencing what seems to be a very slight miss or surge as I'm driving. In the last 45,000 miles of owning this truck, it's been virtually maintenance-free and rock-solid reliable, so I thought it might have been my imagination. However, it's happened enough lately that I believe there's an "issue."

The best way to describe it is that it's sort of like driving on a day that has more wind than normal. As the wind blows, it can come at you in smaller or larger gusts, and though it doesn't slow you or change the tach reading, you can still feel it. I don't seem to be able to feel it at slower speeds, but at anything over 40 or so, I kind of feel a surge or a miss.

To give you a base-line, my truck is a '99 LX with 124,000 miles. The major items have been addressed (timing belt/water pump replaced, starter replaced, Iridium plugs replaced, etc.). I've gone over the possibilities in my mind, but short of a bad coil, bad sensor of some type, etc., I'm not coming up with much. (By the way, the check engine light has not come on at any time, so I'm wondering if any codes would have been stored)

This has not yet become a problem with driving the truck, but I'm concerned that, if left unattended, it might become one.......again, a search of these forums didn't turn up anything, so if anyone has a thought on where I might start, please let me know. Thanks.

Do you experience this only under load? What if you grandma (nice) the accelerator and keep it real low? I'm leaning towards EGR?
Not under any more load than driving down the road....I don't seem to feel it more going up an incline (as a matter of fact, I seem to recall it's less pronounced when accelerating harder)

I had a similar thing happen on my ES300 a couple of months ago. It was missing, and would miss less when accelerating harder. It was actually two seperate problems in my case - the missing and the surging.

I had to do two things to fix it:
1. Changed the spark plugs (they looked really old when taken out) - this fixed the misfiring
2. Changed the air intake hose (ithad cracks on it.) - this changed the surging.

I suggest changing the hoses - those are cheap too. It cost me less than $60 for my ES300. You just changed the spark plugs so that is not the problem.

So my guess is the air intake hoses.

Classic symptom of low-load spark wire wear, as someone else said. I'd start there as that'll be expensive enough, BUT the Hundy's are way beyond me mechanically, so...
these trucks don't have plug wires..................
