I definitely understand the gripe that people have with the closed system. I like it for all of the things that closed system brings to the table though. I know that the user experience is going to be consistent, and "approved" accessories are going to work with minimal time investment on my part. Yeah, it's not the cheapest game in town, but for the extra few bucks the time savings and lack of headaches is worth it IMO.

If I were a tinkerer with that kind of thing though it'd drive me crazy.

I am not good with computers, thats why I loved my mac when I got it. I opened the lid and it just worked. Hardly no boot up/start time, just open and go. no freezes or errors, the thing just worked. But considering I could have bought 3 laptops for the price of that one I expect it to keep lasting and keep working, when it went down and I took it to apple they said all I could do was buy a new one.

I have two junk ipods because the batteries arent replaceable, and when my phone battery dies ill have a 400$ brick.

I see the benefits of a closed system, but we should be able to replace parts like batteries and hard drives.

Wow, I've replaced a HDD in two apple laptops and a battery in an ipod.

Check this place:

They've got kits with the battery and tools you have to have to get the case apart.

What model laptop? I'm pretty sure it's user replaceable in everything but the macbook air.

We bought a powerbook few years ago and got one of the ones afflicted with Narcoleptic Aluminum

Powerbook Syndrome - a whole series of these would just randomly go to sleep every few seconds. It

happened just outside the factory warranty for almost all of them and Apple refused to acknowledge the

problem and was actively deleting any discussions about it on its user forum for months. I finally got

mine repaired under "warranty" - I took it to a local mac shop to repair at our expense and they

accidentally submitted it as a valid warranty repair. New logic board + new keyboard and some parts

of the case were required to fix it.

Not to mention the power adapter goes out every few months and

will only charge intermittently now.

the first was an older ipod before there were any I clinics in town, I got a replacement battery with kit, it didnt work.

the second was an ipod touch, I took it to the iphone repair place here and they said there is no way to open that model.

I am getting a new hard drive for the mac, its just from an independent shop not Apple.

I am going to see about sending in my touch to those guys for a new screen and battery once they get caught up on orders. Although now I am spoiled and like having pandora play through my phone.

Thanks for the link

I got a letter about being part of a class action suit over their s***ty power cable... I had already replaced mine with a knock off and it was cheap enough and worked well enough that I figured it wasnt worth fooling with suit.
