<sigh> big tires/tyres on 18" rims and more lift (yes, done a search)

<newbie warning>

Currently, I have fitted 275/60/18 on my stock 2002 UZJ100 meaning that my tyre height above the 18" rims should be 2 x (275 x .6) = 330mm / 13" meaning that my total wheel size should be 31", does it not?

However, a tape measure reveals that the total wheel height is in fact 29.5 inches and the rims measure about 19.5 from base to top! Tread is good - tyres only done about 2k and inflation is correct.

So, I'm confused.

I don't even know / understand what I've got let alone moving to the next stage which is getting slightly bigger tyres to give a bit more height!

Can anyone spare the time to explain - and even tell me what I could go up to?

I'd like another couple inches lift and, being not very savvy (yet) on the old mechanics side of things, thought I'd do the following in this order:

1) get bigger tyres
2) adjust the height control sensors in front and rear as per instructions on this board.

Searching didn't appear to reveal any useable answers for point 1) I'm afraid.

Ta very much,

I realize you are trying to calculate tire size the "English" way but I suggest you just use one of the many tire size calculators or better yet, look at the manufactures specs.

Generally, you can go up to a 35" tire with 2" of lift though it might require some trimming. IMO, if running 35's, you should regear but not completely necessary. Your current size is 31" diameter. I recommend 33" for a good compromise. Luckily, there are enough 33" tire choices for the 18" wheels.

33" equates to 285/65-18, 275/70-18, 325/60-18, etc. Check out Toyo AT/MT, Nitto AT, BFG AT, etc. The 325's are likely to require a spacer though.

One of the first things I did was swap the tire to a 33" AT. I went with Toyo 275/70/18, but I actually experienced a harder time finding a tire for 18's. Seems like there weren't many in between sizes from the ones Hoser posted. I would have like a bit wider tire without going to the 325 and I didn't care for the popular BFG in 285. In the end, the one I went with is only 11lbs heavier than stock and filled up the fender well. Something to think about regarding vibration and performance issues.

Thanks guys.

Yea, 275/70/18 seems to be a good way to gain a coupla inches without wrecking the geometry or changing the gears.

CruserDug - did you experience much of a noise increase?
