I've been meaning to respond to this. I taught myself how to drive stick on an '83 FJ60 my dad used only for hunting trips. Boy, was he surprised when he caught me, he'd been pretty trusting because he thought I couldn't drive it.

Taught a girlfriend and my younger sister to drive stick in the same truck. Never had an issue, clutch was old already but stood up to the abuse.

Find a a place with little or no circulation and some nice hills.

Toyotas are IMO the easiest cars and trucks to learn how to drive stick on. I tried to teach my wife to drive stick in my BMW M3 before I got my wagon. She could never get it to go off a light without stalling the car and gave up pretty quickly. I pushed her try on the wagon and now she is a regular driver of the vehicle.

I offered to teach the wife, but only right before my H55F swap!

When ever my older brother was not home i would take out his 78 fj40 and try to figure it out. At first i tore up some grass and almost drilled a mercedes. Finally figured it out and its like second nature. I must have taught 10 people how to drive a stick on his car alone.
