Should I switch to 5-30 oil after 100K miles?

The guy at autozone was saying I should switch to 10-30 after the 100K mark. Any truth to this? I already have a case of Mobil 1 extended performance 5-30. It'll be fine, right? I've got an 02 tacoma with a 3.4 and 112K miles.

And while I'm at it, can I really go 15000 on the Mobil 1 extended performance? And yes, I'm using a good filter. Purolator.

Thanks!

I think the 3.4L is supposed to be using 5W-30 oil.
Mileage for an oil change interval is more about the number of cold starts, city driving or highway miles, dusty areas and so on.

What driving are you doing and where do you live at?

Protection wise...the 5 is for when it's cold and the 30 for hot operation.

In my opinion 15,000 miles is longer than I would run an oil even synthetic. But keep an eye on how it looks and see what you think.

I drive an '01 Tacoma, 3.4L with 120k miles. Bought new.

I've run Mobil 1 5w-30 in it since new, and the extended performance Mobil 1 5w-30 for the past 50k miles or so (WalMart is like $28 for a 5 quart jug). I go about 8k to 10k miles between oil changes, with almost all of my driving is rural two lane highways with limited around "town" (I live in a town of 1,200, it's more of a village!). K&N Oil Filters.

I think you could go 15k miles if the color of the oil looks good, but given that the Mobil 1 in the 5 quart jugs isn't all that expensive relatively speaking I don't mind changing it more frequently.

My $0.02

I just turned 100k this week, have never run anything but Mobile 1 since new.

Keep running 5w-30. Mobil 1 warranties their regular synthetic for 10k miles and the extended for 15k miles. Yes you can run that long, providing your engine is up to snuff. Have your oil analyzed and the lab can tell you how long you can run the oil for.

Okay, cool, thanks guys. Yeah, I probably do 70% highway miles and 30% around town. Up to this point I've been using normal Mobil 1 5-30 and running it for about 7500 miles. No problems thus far.

If you want to reassure yourself, take a look at bobistheoilguy.com and read up on oil and see other peoples' results.

I run Lubro Moly 5W40 synthetic in both my 00 4Runner and 05 Tacoma. It's a German true synthetic oil similar to the extended performance Mobil 1. I change them both around every 10k miles and the oil is still clear when I change them. The 00 has 220k and the 05 has about 140k. A good rule of thumb is that oil you can still see through on the dipstick is still OK.
