Should I Abandon My F-Engine Rebuild

The 292 has an appetite for Japanese gears that will make your transfer case a snack and your rear end an endless buffet.

Rebuild the F if you can get pistons and rings for it, or are willing to pay for custom pistons.

If you're going to swap motors to something from GM, you might as well do an LS based GM V8. Well known swap. Fuel Injection. More power. Better parts availability in parts stores. You can call any number of vendors and have a new wiring harness and ECU on your doorstep in a couple days.

F it man...

One thing to do now before you go any further............stop thinking about an FJ40 and "how much it will cost to....."
Everything about these things cost alot to fix and restore. Keep the F and then build a 2F when you can find one, it is just what goes in them.

Their are a lot of F engines for sale. Look in the classifieds and on Craigslist.

I would consider the GM 292 and the SM 465. It's as stone age as a 1F or 2F..Oh wait! The Japanese used the GM straight 6 motor as a basis for the F engine. It's cheaper to rebuild and your gonna have plenty of power and torque....Just like the F engine. If I recollect right the 292 has hydraulic lifters where as my old 1F had solid lifters needing to have periodic lifter adjustment , every 6,000 miles. If I were to do it again this is the route I would take. But, I don't abuse my 40, It's no street rod and it's no SUV...It's a TUV...Tough Utility Vehicle.

As was mentioned earlier. Make sure you can find the pistons you need before doing any boring. I tried and could not find any of the older pop up style that the older open chamber head needed.

Beyond that, an engine machinist willing to bore without having the pistons to measure first is not someone I would want doing the work.

I'm sure Mark is suggesting that the torque of a 292 will break the gears in the transfer case and blow up the rear end.

I'd suggest a 3FE or a SBC over a 250 or rarer 292. Also a newer Chevy V8 or 90* V6 are options also.

Thank you will look into 3fe
3FE have a slightly shorter stroke I believe. That'll mean they'll be happier revving a bit more. Based on what I've read that won't make a big difference in a 40 though.

I am replacing the 155F with a Cummins R2.8 in my 1978 FJ40. I finally got the crank to turn so I can harvest the flywheel and bell housing.
