hey two post I posted that havent showed up????

Yeah im in town and might be able to swing by with you or for you if you need. Im no mechanic but generally know the things to look for and look out for around the 80 series.

Out of town most the day tomorrow but generally a flexible schedule.

basically my earlier response was there is a nissan/toyota specific shop I used years ago called
"the Z shop" in downtown greensboro. I have taken my vehicles there before for stuff beyond me in the past.

also 5 points auto in high point did some prepurchase inspections for me as a teenager and recommended against me buying a trooper and told me why (rings) felt that was a thourough and fair assesment for 25 bux or so

other than that dont really know anyone specific to toyotas esp. cruisers

Hey, thanks JFZ80. I'll see if that Z Shop is willing to do a pre-purchase inspection for me. Just don't want to waste 10 hours on the road.

I can look it over for you but wont be doing a compression check and the like. More visual and drive feel test if you like, just let me know.

Brian is one of the owners at the Z shop.

Thanks again. I have an appointment set up for Thursday at Z Cars. Seem to be nice folks too.

Just out of curiosity, anyone checked out this truck?
1997 lexus lx 450

Seems pretty decent by pictures and the description from the owner.

Best,

Bart

They are good guys. Did you give em a list of things to look for? Cant hurt to be particular and pay attention to the typical problem areas. (#6 compression, Wiring bundle by EGR, radiator bubble test, etc) Great guys either way.

ive seen that truck around town...the purple fogs are a dead giveaway. :D

No I didn't. Quite frankly, I've never owned an 80 and not terribly familiar with them. I knew of the wiring bundle problem but wasn't aware there were any other chronic problems. #6 cylinder dies prematurely?

not really chronic problems. The Head Gasket has issues with failing at #6 on the 95-97's (1fz)
You can do a "bubble test" to see if there is air in the coolant, or check the oil for coolant as well.
I wouldnt make it out to be the pandemic some folks do, but I got me a new one :D (not from failure)

A leakdown test should detect some of these same issues as well i believe. ?
the z guys will probably do leak down and compression??? might ask em

As a buyer I'd look at overall condition and leaks and forseen maintenance to barter the price.
If the axle is weeping use it to your advantage, leather cracked same thing. All things you can and will want to do to PM and spruce up your new ride.

I was overly picky but they werent near as cheap 5 yrs ago... checking the back glass for the typ rust spot, jack compartment for water/rust, shiny paint:lol:

Tons of info on 80s tech down to the nitpicky details (look under roof rack for rust etc)

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

got lockers? :D

looks nice and a low mileage rig, shoot him the 5500 offer if it pans out

No, no lockers. Not sweating it though. Truck is for my wife as family car. She wants to be driving around a lot of steel, and we need a better towing vehicle than my 62 for our camper trailer. Never have any intention of wheeling it at all.

Thanks for the points above. Assuming it is solid, I'll see what I can wrestle him down to.

Best,

Bart
