I'm putting in some coils this week on the front of the pig. Room is tight, but I do have some options.

What are the disadvantages of mounting the shocks inside the coil springs? I've seen it on lots of stock vehicles and a couple of off road rigs including a pretty hard core big block Rubicon on 42s.

I'll be capturing the springs top and bottom, but I don't know how far the springs might shove into the shocks under different conditions.

I did it this way on my 40. It really depends on the O.D. of the shock body, I.D. of the coils & amount of travel you expect. I wouldn't design it that way again. At the time I thought it was the best way to compact things as it's real tight w/ a stock axled rig running coils. I'd raise the base of the coils up enough to clear steering knuckle arm at full lock. I had a design worked up to capture the upper coil but after I flexed it out the coils were still firmly attached & the shock had bottomed out.

You mean like a coilover??? :D

Nothing inherently wrong with it.

just kind of a PITA to make work..
Think of how long (or short) the coil is Vs the length of the shock you will want to run.

How does your setup look like??
the pic is not on my truck but i am going to coil mine this winter in a similar way....

i like putting the bumpstop inside the coilspring. and only capturing the bottom so the spring can droop or slide over the bumpstop , then using the shock or limit strap to limit downtravel, for maximum articulation.
thats what I did on my piggy and i can use 14 in shocks no problem! works great for me.

I did that with the rear on my pig and it was really tippy. I captured the springs on both ends because Mace was so adamant that it needed to be done and, sonofabitch, he was right. Tons better with both ends captured.
I also use all of my 14 inch Bilstiens just fine.
