Ok, so I let off the clutch in 1st, and De-blip and click up at the same time. I've herd no noises, no mist shifts.

Downshifting; most of the time is lurch free, but sometimes I don't do it exactly right.

Is this hurting my transmission? Will doing this cause it to have a shorter lifespan? Should doing this be avoided?

I have a NX250, so I'll assume that b/c it doesn't have gobs of POWA!! it's letting me do this.

I haven't really seen, or herd anyone else ding this?

Some bike will shift without the clutch. It is not recommend. Older bike do this since everything is looser.

IMO, If you're smooth, the clutch isn't needed for upshifts after 1st. It's all in the delivery of power. Accelerate, let up slightly for a split second, pop it up a gear, roll on the gas. Miss it and it will let you know if it doesn't like it. :)

Yeah. VFRMAN's advice is spot on. its all in how a m/c tranny works. (constant mesh and all) if you're smooth, shifting cluchless is no big deal. I tend to use the clutch a lot more on downshifting than upshifting.

I mean, heck, with practice you can to the same thing in your cruiser or most any other stick-shift.

Unless I am mistaken, most racers & racebikes shift w/o the clutch.

right, still working on the technique:D

Is there any way this could lock-up on me?

So far, it's been perfect, it's been behaving no matter what I do. But I'm just curious if she could throw me?

the reason for all this is I have a feeling it's the original, and been adjusted out as far as she'll go. I'm not ready right now to do the clutch, but I will do it.

....just not right now:D

Back in my motorcross days I had transmission failure from use of no clutch. It can wear the sides of the shifting forks and the corners of side dogs of the gears that engage and disengage. This problem will be accelerated by doing wheelies and shift in the air.

I raced offroad for 10 years. Used the clutch for starting and stopping only. Never had a transmission problem. This was on KX's, YZ's and a KTM. A little practice is all it takes.

On the street I might be inclined to use the clutch for decel to smooth it out a bit. If your tire slides in the dirt its no big deal.

is the gear box oil shared with the engine?

or are they separate?

No problems with clutchless shifting on a sequential transmission. I do it on my GSXR-750 all the time. 13k miles on it with zero issues. As long as you're not forcing it then it won't damage the shift forks or anything else.

I usually downshift with the clutch, but not always. I've got a slipper clutch to protect from rear tire lockup though.

Almost all of my upshifts are without the clutch. On the track or while riding hard on the street, I dont use the clutch on downshifts either. No issues if you do it correctly.
Shift away:D

I'm getting a lot of tramp when I'm hard de-celing (is that a bad thing?). I don't have a slipper. But since I'm hardwired for performance driving, I'm ever cognizant, and never do it in a lean.

I'll do lotz of stuff when I'm straight up. :D

Anyway. I'm still working on it. And Honda's not making it any easier with the ginormous gap between 1st and 2nd :bang:

Becasue of that, I have to clutch and ease out in 2nd in long right hand turns. From a stop, at an intersection for instence. 1st is just too low.

Otherwise....:grinpimp: hot damn, I'm loving it! :bounce:

Still ok, but I'm starting to miss more gears. (could be me, and it probably is. Its cold, and my shifter feel might be suffering.) Are these trannys easy to rebuild?

Anybody ever ride in wrestling/ driving shoes?

I know laces are bad, but can't ya just tuck'em in and ride on?

The more you think about it, the more gears you'll miss. BE THE BIKE, MAN! :)

Sidi Vertebrate(?)boots, bought em off eBay and the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. I'd wear them to bed if my wife would let me.

The wrong boots(or any shoes for that matter) make everything suffer. Get some good ones that fit like a glove and give you some ankle protection. My $.02.

Sounds like you're having a blast? I look at my bike everyday when I back out of the garage into the never ending snow. Sniff, sniff......:(

Time for the XR and studs, but the snow is too damn deep. Some day............................

x2 on a good set of riding boots. I've got a pair of Oxtars that are great. HUGE improvement in protection and shifter feel compared to regular boots. I don't ride in street shoes - never have, never will, so I can't offer a comparison there.

Back in the day when my three older kids drove the fj 55 to school, everything leaked like crazy. I thought I showed them how to add brake fluid to the clutch mc, but it always came up dry.....I bet I drove the 12 miles from town at least 5 times with no clutch. It's not that hard.......
