I am in the middle of a Split Transfer Case Rebuild on a 1989 BJ70 with 5 sod manual and am wondering what is the correct orientation of the 2wd - 4WD shift clutch. When I was removing the front output shaft the shift clutch dropped on to the floor and I noticed that the clutch teet are tapered (pointed) in one direction and flat on the other side. Does anyone know what direction the pointed teeth on the shift clutch (shift collar) should face?

Also, when I removed the idler shaft Gear oil poured out of the idler shaft hole at the front of the case. I assume that I need to replace the seals between the transmission and extension housing as well as te seal between the extension housing and T -case. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

The tapered teeth of the clutch will go towards the teeth the clutch moves towards to ease engagement.

The idler shaft is removed during an overhaul... and the transmission is what's on the other side of that opening. The idler has two o-rings that seal the shaft to the casings.

The transfer case input shaft seal needs to be replaced. The front case half should be removed to replace the front output bearing and that is the best time to replace the t'case input (transmission output) seal.

You really should have an FSM to work by.

Thanks John

I downloaded the chassis manual whick is of great help thanks to Calvin.

The clutch on the front half of the output shaft only has pointed teeth on one side. Are you saying that that the points should go toward the front or toward the rear of the vehicle?

Thanks again.

Its been awhile since I had my Transfer-case apart.
Logic says the points as John has said will be the leading side.
The clutch ring will always sit over one gear when in 2WD.
When it moves to 4WD and lock in the front output shaft, the points will face the gear it moves to.
So you should be able to work out its 2Wd / 4Wd position and orientate ring appropriately.
From my distant memory the points face fwd....and the output shaft also has small points which face rear.

Thanks Calvin for your input. I will install the clutch with the points forward and see what happens.

I really appreciate your help - I could not find a reference to the clutch position in the chassis manual but it will be very useful for other parts of the rebuild.
