I'd bring the 80 and not the Scout! I get nervous just driving the Scout on a freeway let alone a trail.
The 80 has 35's, lockers, 3" lift. I'm not really worried about the ability of the 80, it's the driver that worries me!

You will be jsut fine. I have no problem calling for a strap when I think I need it even if others don't this will be a safe run and lots of fun.

Dan, Have you ever ran any of there trails. Red cayote are in a completely different area than swamp and dinky creek area. It is quite a long way sway. Coyote is a one way in and out trail and is not a loop. The trail ends a cayote and you must go all the way out to sand flats to get to strawberry.

Leaving at 4pm from shaver, it will take 45 min to an hour to get to the trail head and another 2 hours to get to cayote. I would say from shaver you have a good 3.5 hours to cayote if everything goes smoothly. Why not camp at red? Red has good camping.

I dont know what map you are looking at, but to my knowlegde you can not get to dinky lakes from Red mountain.

I have the most currant USGS forestry Topo map that is used by CalTrans. THe red lake I am looking at is less than a mile from Coyote Lake. There are roads that go between Straberry, Red, Coyote, First Dinkey Lake, and down to Swamp. There are a lot, and I mean a lot of roads in there and many dead end. Even using google maps, I can see the trails when I overlay it with a topo map. There are two ways into all the lakes. We shall see. I wish I could take a picture of the maps I have. It would be much easier. If you want, you can go here and follow the trails between the lakes The USGS Store

Better yet, find an online source for topo maps and find the dogtooth Peak quad. The lakes are in the lower 3rd of the map. You will be able to see the 4x4 routes clearly marked and it loopes backs to about a mile south of the route we are taking in.

Maybe one of the trails has been closed off. If there isn't a loop, not a big deal. WHat ever happens, it will be fun. Thanks for the heads up Cacy. I am interested to see why maps show routes when there are none available.

There are trials that go out the back of red, but they are horse and hiking trails. I have been up there over 10 times and there is not 2 ways into red and coyote. Be every careful up there not to go down a trail that is closed. Just because it is not blocked off, doesnt mean you can drive it. If you are caught off trail it is a big fine and that is some of the issues they are running into on the red mountain trails. There are volunteer wheels up there that can give out tickets.

I do know there are private drives that go into swamp and other lakes up there, but dont get caught on them they are private property.

we are not goint to coyote friday night-too far. thinking of going to westlake friday night and camping there. what ya think? sat we could then give mirror lake a shot in the morn (I guess its hard) and then backtrack to coyote and camp there sat night.

i have been to westlake.

so far the people going:
Me and mine fam
Dan and his boy--and that hugemongous trailer--we'll call it the orgasmatron 2000
Dean and his girls
Justin and his entire fam
my dad in law and his wife and his new jeep-maiden voyage

i told my fam we need to pack light and efficient with regards to meals. so nobody better be baking a duck or bbqing ribs. itl make me look bad. kidn. im thinkin about doing some dutch oven stuff sat night. i can do an ok kobler and thats about it. antone else know how to cook with these things? with dans trailer we could do anything. does the trailer have a BBQ?

I plan on going as well. Is the plan to meet at your cabin Friday at 3pm? if so please PM me some directions to your place.

yep meet at my place 3pm. its in the lower dogwood development-my place is right off the 168 about 4 miles before you get to shaver.
As you are driving up the 168 on the way to shaver you turn left onto the road with the huge sign that says "Dogwood".. easy to get to-my cabin is only a couple hundred yards from the 168..
Ill PM you the address tonight

bad news i had some family things come up this weekend cant go. i really wanted to go too. maybe next time. and mirror lake isnt that hard. it takes me about a hour to get there. good fishing there too.

thats ok. will catch you on the next run

Good info Cacy. We will be very sensitive to the typw of trails we are on. Good to know. Which I could meet up with you before the trip to look at my maps (I am a map freak guy) and let me know what is good to go.

Still need to hook up with you fort he axle shaft.

cool. its all good.

if the clouds/weather report up at shaver gets worse we may need to rethink this thing anyway. If its clear Im still going for it friday eve-and taking the fam whether they like it or not. Im loaded for bear (litteraly) and ready. keep in mind people that it is in the low 30's at night up there right now. be ready

If there is considerable risk for snow or rain friday night the cabin is a backup. So everyone can still meet at the cabin friday and we can make a big fire outside at the cabin and then sleep inside-the cabin is a nice 2500sq feet and heated-plenty of room-2 baths and 2 showers. then we can have breakfast at the cabin and hit a trail sat am-baldi, swamp, coyote, or wherever. if we sleep at the cabin friday we can try and camp saturday night or whatever.

Hopefully the weather is ok as I realy want to camp this trip and am ready to camp.

No matter what me and the fam will be at the cabin friday 3pm. everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. the weather will not stop this. please bring your kids, wives, girlfriends if you have them.

My cell is 639-7602 and anyone can call me.

Dustin, one of the stockton guys is going to be coming in Saturday. Any idea where we might be so he can meet up with us?

Weather will be fine. No problems.

I'll bring a cheap canopy for the rain. Might as well set up a base camp withteh weather and go to different trails during the day?

update
i spoke with the forest service
coyote lake is not officially open. if we go there we may get in trouble

but westlake/straberry/mirror lakes are all open and officially ok for camping. swamp will be closed 2 more weeks

so i think we should plan on making westlake on friday eve if it aint rainin

we could make westlake a base camp and from there hit mirror lake and straberry. or we could hit mirror on sat and then head up to straberry sat night

Hi all,

The THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE CLUB OF FRESNO has built as well as continued to help maintain those trails since 1954.
So if you have any questions or concerns you can check out
www.4wdcfresno.net

However that is a correct statement that there is not a legal trail from coyote to dinkey or swamp.
The trail to coyote starts at red lake and then finishes back at red.
FYI coyote Lake itself is in the wilderness, and the only access to the dinkey lakes is horseback or walking. I've walked it myself many times.

Thanks, Nate
