Hello all,
I finaly got a chance to take my 40 out to URE to test out its potential. The 40 had a blown transfer case when I bought it back in July so hadnt had a chance to wheel it.
I drove up to URE on friday morning and just got back a few hours ago. The 40 performed very well. It conquered all the trails out there with the exception of Daniel. I was supposed to go up Daniel this morning but decided against it because of a power steering issue that developed late last night while on the trail.
Now I have a list of little things to do before the URE run laster this month.
Sorry about not having pics. The few pics taken of my rig are in my buddis camera and he is staying out there until moday. I will post up pics when I get them from him.

Power steering, what's that?

Dude, I ran Armstrong Steering on "Dozer" for about 11 years... What was I thinking???? The Saginaw box will turn those 35's in the rocks to the point I am scared I am going to break a stearing arm or something. Glad to hear it went well Del.

I am not too familiar with power steering either. Have had my 40 for 20 years now and still have Armstrong steering. Its fun when it is locked in in the front end going downhill and trying to turn tight.

Now lets see some pics.

I have saginaw power steering but when I go to 4 low it gets real hard to turn the steering wheel. Is this normal?

I can turn mine with two fingers, if that gives you any frame of reference. On the trail, I have never had to exert any effort, but I am not locked in the front, is your's?

Ramon,
It normaly is the same way on my truck. It is actually to soft normally. I check the fluid level and it was on the low side so im hoping that it was the problem. I filled it when I got it home but havent checked it afterward. It did get real hard to stear only when in 4wd.

Any thoughts?

Del, sounds like you may have a locker up front. Wouldn't feel it unless you were engaged in 4WD.

Well, any time the hubs are locked - whether in 2WD or 4WD right? Probably worse in 4wd for sure.

Yes it would affect steering when the wheels are spinning in conjunction with one another wouldn't matter if the driveshaft was spinning or not.

I am going to be replacing the fluid in both difs as soon as I get a break from work and will snap a pic of whats in there. If I remember correctly the previous owner mentioned somthing about lockers but I cant recall. Either way I will post a pic and maybe one of you can let me know whats in there.
By the way anyone have pointers on how to change the fluid on front and rear diffs?

Pretty straight forward, just remember to take off the fill plug before you drain anything. It sucks to drain the fluids and not be able to get the fill plug off to re-fill the diffs...

Jack up both front wheels, lock hubs, leave in 2wd. Spin one wheel by hand, if the other spins, it's locked. Hopefully not "Lincoln Locked", but you'll be able to tell when you pop the diff cover off. Changing the diff oil is straight forward. Remove the drain plug, drain oil, replace fill plug. Check the plug for metal shavings if it is magnetic, and wipe it clean. Remove the fill plug and fill with 90W until it starts weaping out the fill plug. Replace fill plug. Repeat for rear axle.

Thanks for the tips fellas. I figured it was that straight forward but better to ask as I am fairly new to this.

Jerry - that sounds like the voice of experience, ha! Definitely a great tip!

In a land far, far away and a time long ago, an old moto-cross bike and a bad fork seal, dumped the fork oil but couldn't get the frozen aluminum top nut off, equalled destroyed parts and a lesson learned...
