Hi guys just need some advice on setting the backlash on my front diff.

I left one side with the adjuster nut and bearing cap pre set in the factory position so I know one side is right, but I disassembled the other side, and marked the point where the adjuster nut it is held in place so I could put it back together the same way later.

Now if i screw the adjuster nut on and turn it to the marked position it was previously in, it has a little backlash (i would say half a mm or so) but the adjusting nut seems very loose. I can turn the adjusting nut a full turn tighter back in the same marked position and there is no backlash. Which one is it?

Thanks for that mate. A few interesting reads in there. I decided to grab a dial indicator to do it properly and it turns out neither of the ones I was thinking of was correct.

I'am glad that helped. I bought my first dial indicator years ago. Great investment.
I had built quite a few diffs in my time and now they are set up better then ever. I give my thanks to Zuk for showing me things I didn't know. No matter how good you think you are learning never ends.

Take care.
