I have ten days to burn and I'd like to see as many cool trails and campsites as I can. I know a lot of people say that Death Valley and Moab need the 10 days for themselves due to their sheer greatness, but I've got a few other places I'd like to stop by on the way. So the official lineup is:

Sequoias: 1 night
Death Valley: 2 nights
Zion: 2 nights
Moab: 2 nights
Lake Powell: 1 night
Vegas: 1 night in a cheap hotel

What are the highlights of these places? Does anyone have a must see list or coordinates for awesome camping?

I would add Bryce Canyon instead of 2 days in Zion, and add Valley Of Fire instead of Vegas. When in Zion take a look at running out to toroweap overlook from Kanab/Fredonia.

What route will you take from Zion to Moab?

DV: Race track and Saline Valley Hot Springs..
Zion: Has the Narrows and Orderville Canyon, but access is dependent on water flow/levels.
There is also the Subway, but if you never been, I would suggest getting a guide...
Bryce: Has spectacular views during sun rise and sun down... easily accessible.
Toroweap: I think you need to have permits now days among vehicle size restrictions...
Moab: There is so much to do n see...
Lake Powell: I only have explored Hole in the rock Rd. There is so much to explore out there..

You can't go wrong on any of these places..

The "subway" in Zion requires a difficult, long hike and a permit. The toroweap campground requires a reservation and the campground is presently closed for winter (don't know why, all it is are level spots to park next to).No permits to travel there thoughm

there is forest service land on the Mount Trumbull road where you camp and collect fire wood. There is reservation land to the north, and they really don't want to you so much as stopping.....

In Death Valley being at Dantes View right at dawn is awesome.

Check to see if they are still running thr crystal cave tour near Sequoia

Goler/Mengel pass in Death Valley was a nice up and over trip.
Might want to try to find out current conditions after the recent rains, though. It can get hammered up there.

I was planning on taking the 15 to the 70, unless there is a better way?

I totally forgot about Bryce Canyon. I will definitely check that out

Awesome info!! Will an 80 series meet the size restrictions for toroweap?

We were also considering skipping Powell in favor of running more trails in Moab

I drove my 100 to toroweap over Thanksgiving. If you are going to moab that way, might i suggest heading out of bryce along highway 12 (check road conitions between Boulder and Torrey, likely will have hard pack snow) Thence thru Capitol Reef NP and Goblin State Park and connect with 70 at Green River.

Toroweap is impressive, but it takes most of a day

How much snow should I be expecting in these places in mid January? I have experience snow wheeling but I'm pretty unfamiliar with the amount of seasonal snowfall Moab, Brice canyon, and Zion get.

Snow in Death Valley (basin), none.

If you do decide to go into the Saline valley though, and it snows on the passes, be prepared to stay a while.

You will regret trying to do too much. Way better to do half of that and explore more.

Highly recommend 4 days in DV, then a travel day to Utah and do the Hole in the Rock trail on the Bluff side out to the end, then hike the canyon to the water. That will eat up your time and you will see what's there much more definitively.

Moab weather in January can be cold. If we get snow and an inversion sets up we can have below zero temps at night and not warming up much during the day. If we don't get snow its a little warmer but not much. If your out exploring and you have a mechanical it can get serious if your not prepared. Most locals vacation south at this time.

Check out www.citrusmilo.com before going to Zion. It's a very informative site with route descriptions and technical difficulty of hikes, with stunning photos.

You may slo want to check out Kanarra Creek in Kanarraville. It's about 25-30 minutes from St George and requires a short hike, albeit a portion wading through ice cold water. After hiking approximately 1.5 miles, you will reach a slot canyon. Go a little further and you will reach the waterfalls.

I usually do Zion over TG to avoid the crowds and ease of permits, but I would plan for 2 days at the very least. It gets COLD out there.

I agree with Cruiserdrew and set out to explore any two destinations, but the drive-by alone to any of these places will get yah hooked and keep you coming back for more each time...!!

It's a beautiful thing......:beer::beer:

Have a blast and be safe...!!!

When are you planning your trip, I am in St george. I would defiantly recommend toroweap, it is freaking awesome no snow some mud. Pm me if you still haven't started your trip already.
