I know NOTHING about Sequoias - other than I want one!

On my buddies '02 the hatch handle was broken. The latch is low on the hatch, not well protected, so gets filled with debris, jamming, binding it up. Once bound, operation takes more force, leading to the broken handle and the remote switch not having the power to operate it.

We bent a piece of metal rod, inserted through the handle hole, felt the lever tripped it and opened the hatch. Then cleaned and lubed the latch, worked much easier and with the remote. If you cant get it open from the outside, then the inside panels have to come off to get at it. IIRC starting at the top around the window, the sides, the loop handle trim slides off and a 10mm bolt, then the main trim panel and a metal access panel under it.

All of that and more has to come off to replace the handle, but it was much easier with the door open.

Handle might be broken, replaced mine 2x( first replacement was made of metal but it bent , so the second time i used oe parts even though its only a hard plastic - it took almost 10 yrs before it gave up. While you're in there change the cable too.

This seems to be a common problem with these. I just bought a 2004 that had the same issue as yours. Original owner replaced it for us before we bought and he had the receipts from the dealer saying it cost $242.00. Also my sister has a 2004 and has had to replace hers twice in 6 years.
