I'm in the Cruiser Assistance Club, a group of folks around the nation who'll get to you and render assistance in the form of lodging, parts, etc to get you back on your trip. Because of this, I hang onto many 80 parts I change out. An old radiator hose won't meet my standards, but if you're on the freeway and it's Sunday I can get you on your way with it.

Recently, GeoRoss here offered to send me his ignition wires as I'd recently used my spares to help someone and it got me thinking that it would be great of many of you were to send your old parts to a CAC member in your area like he has. That way, the quality of assistance to 80 owners would dramatically go up.

To access the list, click on the "Cruiser Assistance Club" link at the top of most pages here on the forum. As a tip, an excellent way to use the list is to print out a list and toss it in your glovebox when going cross country. Then you've got instant help and Forum access via a member by simply making phone calls.

It would be a simple matter to simply contact your local CAC contact and offer to send some bits. And it just may save a trip for one of us some day. Some parts worth sending to CAC members include:

Belts
Hoses
Plug/coil wire sets
Cap/rotor
Starter
Starter contact set (inc. plunger)
Fuel filter
Radiator cap
Gas cap
Lug nuts
Wiper arms
Drain/fill plugs for diffs/oil pan/tranny pan
Brake pads
Thermostat
Wheel bearings/race

Thanks,

Good idea Doug,

I got a CAC call last Friday. The guy was stranded about 50mi West of Albuquerque with a bad PS pulley. Unfortunately it was for a 2F engine (FJ60), but after some calling around I was able to put him in touch with a HDC member that had a spare. He had some long distances to travel to pick up the parts and get them back to his Cruiser but it was better (for him) than waiting until after the Memorial Day holiday to get parts shipped in.

Excellent job. Perfect example, too.

I have a few parts I can donate. Where do I send it to? The link doesn't have info on where to send parts.

I also have some parts I can donate. A set of used, but otherwisse good ignition wires, wheel bearings and races in good shape, belts, ring and pinion (worn and a bit tired, but can get someone out of bind) also other misc. parts, I am sort of pack rat and tend to keep stuff.

To send the stuff, contact a member and ask if they're willing to take it, then make arrangements. As a suggestion, things like Antonio's ring and pinion would be great to get to a CAC member near a major offroading area such as Moab. That's where a part like that would most likely be needed. Ditto things like old drive shafts, birfs, or CV joints. The rest of the parts are the show stoppers for anyone simply driving down the interstate.

I've got an entire front axle 3rd member in Michigan I'll be bringing out West here on my next trip. It was replaced due to noise but would still get someone home.
