Hey all - I can't remember when selling a car private party - do I have to have the title notarized in NC? Or can I just sign it and be done with it?

Thanks,
Paul

and dont sign it before you get there, must be witnessed.....

Unless you have a good relationship with the person who is your notary...but be safe and like Jason said, wait and sign it when you are there. They (the notary) should also help you fill out what you need to and where as the seller. The first time it's a little confusing b/c you don't want to screw it up but the next time it's easy.

New titles in NC only require the seller signatures to be notarized....not trying to make things more complicated but both parties don't have to be present at the notary, just the seller when he signs away the title. I know because I have now been through 41 titles....yeah I know thats pretty sad.

Show-off :).

Correct though...the seller can have his portion notarized and the buyer can wait an indefinite time to title the vehicle. I still haven't title the 70 40 that I purchased in January...no need until it's road worthy.

Jon keep in mind there is a penalty (premium paid) upon titleing if not done within 45 days of purchase. This is the states way of making up the taxes lost on not titleing immediately.

Good to know...I guess I'll be paying that penalty :frown:.

Just checked the NC DMV site and the penalty is 15.00 if not transferred within 28 days.

a month ago they almost took the title of my car from me because was an "open title". Meaning that the guy signed and did not have my name on it and aparently in NC it is ilegal to have a open title. I save the title because i had the bill of sale and the lady was willing to wait for me to run home and come back with it. Almost had to do everthing again.
