I'm wanting to get some feedback from people who have used Sherwin Williams GBP 988 aerosol self etching primer. I'm wanting to strip some parts and sand and prime them while my cruiser is sitting there and I can't drive it. I won't be able to paint it for a couple years but I want to try to clean it up some and prevent any further rust.

Who's used it and was pleased/displeased with it?

you can either use that or get a metal etching agent... you spray it on, it etches then you wash it off. It can be bought at NAPA and i think its called tripple etch. Then i'd follow it up with NAPA's line of crossfire products using there acrylic enamal primer/surfacer. I think the spray on metal etching stuff is called like triple etch. You can buy a gallon of primer for like 42.00 from NAPA. good luck!

if you don't have a spray gun i would just get normal spray paint primer which will be cheaper and go the extra mile and get that bottle of etching agent for like 15.00 a qaurt.. i've used it and it works gooood.

I already have some phosphoric acid (which seems to be the most common ingredient in metal etching products) that I will use to wash the metal prior to primer. I was always taught that it's best to use an acid wash and then a self etching primer over that for fool proof adhesion. A compressor/spray gun isn't an option right now, so since I can't just go pick up a quart of Dupont variprime self etching primer and use it, I've been looking at a few aerosol self etching primers. I haven't had any experience using them, so I was looking for some input. Paint products without a catalyst scare me. But I don't have a better option at this point.

don't be scared of 1k paints lol... i think you'll fine with just the acid wash, but if you wanna go spend the extra money on the etching paint go ahead.

Steer clear of any swp products. I am an industrial painter, and have painted all of my cruisers with www.diamondvogel.com . Look into Zinc products if you are going to let it sit for that long.

Good Luck:)

WebElk, went to your site... could you be more specific in what you used and why? I like getting advice from a pro.

Mar Hyde

I've used Mar Hyde self etching primer in a spray can that I got at the auto paint store that sold me the rest of my supplies for a total restoration. They suggested using this self etching primer as a spot preparation whenever I sanded to bare metal. I also use it for stuff that I've sandblasted. Seems to work OK.
