alright LS, i won't talk about my last deposit at the porcelain throne but i will talk about my 80.

this week i fixed my passenger front power seat. i just removed the seatbelt from the passenger front side. what a pain. it in the wash right now. i think i'll leave the other one for another day. i hope this fixes my sagging seatbelt. i finally got around to installing the 3rd row steps this week as well.

next on the list is to call dan at american toyota and order the parts for the front axle. i'm gonna put on new rotors, and 100 pads and rebuild the calipers while i'm in there. i'm debating over whether or not to put in new u-joints as well.

hopefully by october i'll have that done so i can move to the rear axle.

here's a recent pic. i don't think i ever posted one after i bought it.

better late than never with the pics. Check out the front axle kit from cruiser outfitters, it is a lot cheaper and is good quality. You might also want to look at doing the longfield wipers and marlin inner seals while you are in there.

That pic makes me drool.... seriously thinking of painting Ms. Bobbit a navy blue...

terryjmatthewjterrymatt ordered the front rebuild kit from Marlin specifically for the inner seals.... and he paid for them and they were on the packing list....guess what he got... OEM!
I have to assume this was an OLD kit... anyway... i love Marlins seals... if you order form him... explain that you are aware that some people have gotten the wrong seals and you sure better get the correct ones...

PS - that color is badass

thanks for the advice on the parts. a bit too late. i've already completed the order with dan. before i do the rear bearings i'll shout here first.

thanks for the comments on the color. i really wanted a grey interior and the dark blue was a huge bonus.

fwiw - struggled for 2 hours to completely remove the passenger seatbelt, washed it in the machine, ironed it dry and reinstalled...

wait for it....

big finish....

no improvement. if i get inspired again, i'll try to wind it up a bit. my son rides shotgun alot so i don't want to loose the safety lock by winding it too tight. kinda want to keep him around.

and to add insult to injury, when i moved the seat all the way forward to access the trim panel, the stupid white cap fell off that i had just replaced to "fix" my power seat and i got stuck in the forward position. got to do that fix again as a bonus for my work.

I have the 3rd row seats belts from Lorena still... Well... Cory has them now... they're grey.

In Catty I took the 3rd row belts and used them for the front row since the originals were WORN OUT. They fit fine... the piece that holds the bolt at the end is different but still works.. the unit that goes into the B pillar is exactly the same.

At one time i removed the little roller ball (that locks the belt in place) and cleaned it because my belts were getting stuck for now reason... it was because the mechanism was gunked up with dust and junk.... It was NOT easy and took a while to clean, but worth it when the seatybelt no longer choked me... AND it still locked up when pulled fast or fast stops...

Let me know how the seatbelt wash and re-install goes.

There was a thread in the 80 series forum sometime in the last few months discussing the merits of the Marlin seals vs. OEM. Some were of the opinion that for the 80s with full time 4wd that OEM inner axle seals actually work better than the Marlins.

Really Jim? I'm not a typical 80 wheeler, but I've never had an OEM seal last while I have had the marlins last.
Of course... I pull shafts in and out of the seal alot more than most... so that may be the reason the OEM seals don't last...

I remember that thread. I used oem a few years ago when I first did the knuckle job and the marlin seals last spring. I like the spring in the oem better than the cheesy clip in the marlin seal, but the marlin seal is so much easier to install that I would recommend it for that reason alone. I went through 4 oem seals the first time I did the job, I could not get them to seat right in the cold weather. The Marlin seal has a huge sealing area compared to the oem also. Regardless of what you use, if the axle breathers are clogged you will get contamination. When the housing heats up and the air/grease expands it has to go somewhere. Fortunately with the part time case I don't really worry about it anymore. The longfield wipers are nice too, if you do get some cross contamination it looks like they will at least keep it contained in the knucke.
