Hi,

I know that this should go under "Parts Wanted" but I've already posted it there with no responses for 5 days or so. If anyone out there has a decent one around Northern Calif. please let me know. Would like to get my 60 up and running soon.

thanks,

G

why 85+? 81-87 are the same.

This is a perfect time for a conversion... If I wanted to stay with 4 doors, I would put a 13BT + H55F in mine.

I may have mine available, if my BC contact comes up with a BJ42 for me and sends me a diesel engine to put in the FJ60 for him to have. But that's kinda a pipe dream right now.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for reading and the advice. I actually want to do a conversion soon but just wanted to get a 2f thrown in for the short term. Why I want an '85 or newer... I think for the most part that the engine and drive train are the same for 81-87 but I have heard that there are some differences between 81-84 and 85-87. I don't remember the details but I'm sure someone can elaborate and probably has. I thought that and 85 or newer would just be easier to deal with. Plus I think that in Kalifornia you can only put an engine in same year or newer... With the new smog rules I might have some issues... Oh, yeah, I will need to get the truck smogged so the engine has to be in pretty good shape...

And as far as diesels go I'm gonna have to check with the smog referee again, I would advise anyone else to do so here in this new smog environment. I know you'll get different answers from different people in the referee world but I think I would be careful putting a non California spec'd (sold commercially in CA) engine in because I think you might run into problems (2 guys in Sac said "NO WAY" and then my local guy said, "well, I'd have to look at it". I'm talking about the 2H and 3B and other engines.

Anyway, thanks again for reading and any ideas.

'81 to '87 will suit you fine. everything from your's will bolt on. in fact, i think everything on teh engine is the same. the major difference is the late '85 had a different 4 speed, and therefore different lenght driveshafts, etc etc... but none of that changes the fact that the engine block and head are the same (as are the manifolds, carb, etc etc).

oh, and i don't know any... sorry.

i called my referee, and he said "yes" to the diesel. he said he wouldn't even open the hood, didn't care. if'n it's diesel, it's exempt. but... i wrote down his name and will make sure i go to him when i have my Onan installed (three weeks or so)

I'm pretty sure that in California if the model car didn;t come stock with the diesel motor you couldn't legally put in the Toyota diesel motor, but you can drop in a cummings or any other diesel offered here of the same vintage or newer. I'm not sure about this but that was what I thought were the rules. I am still trying to get the OK to convert my exhaust to a single cat system for my FJ-62. This smog stuff is tricky, at least cars of 30 year old vintage are still going to be smog exempt in Cali. thanks to Arnold Governator. That is great because we just bought an 1975 FJ-55 and it will be exempt in 2 months!! The 55 has a 2F in it that we will not be using. I don;t know the condition yet. I am located in Campbell, 35 miles south of The City. I'll get back to you when the car gets here next week some time.

85-87 2.5F changes

Actually, there are several differences between 81-84 2F versus the 85-87 2.5F. The rest of the world got 3F & H55 starting in'85. USA got screwed by receiving the H42 w/ dummy 5speed housing. Toyota didn't want to try to smog a carbed 3F, considering all the difficulty they'd had getting the 2F to pass. The solution: build a special 2.5F engine w/ the stroke of a 2F and the head, and other detail differences of a 3F. This means that 85-87 2F has the following differences: 3F cylinder head w/ extra manifold bolt holes, 3F t-stat housing and gasket (goes w/ head), 3F head gasket (goes w/ head), 3F main bearings w/ separate thrust bearings, 3F oil pan w/ small drain plug, 3F torx bolts on timing plate, 3F screw in oil galley plugs...

This doesn't change the fact that the 81-87 2F engines can be swapped around as an assembly. I think miles and maintenance history are more important than year.

85+ Rebuild issues

Jim,

Given the differences in the 85+ motors, would you need a 3F rebuild kit?

I ask because I'm considering one of the PacLift 2F kits that everyone talks about. But with the 85+ having 3F main and thrust bearings and a different head/gasket, I suspect the 2F kit would have the wrong parts to rebuild my block.

Thanks in advance.
