whats the difference between LJ78W and HZJ77HV?
is there anymore other 4 door 70 series that im missing?

now im seeing more and more 4 door 70s with different names
PZJ77V-KAI
KZJ-78
they all look like thesame rig but whats with the different names? :bang:

Something like this, not sure if it is correct though...

HZJ = 1HZ 4.2 litre 6 cylinder diesel engine
PZJ = 1PZ 3.4 litre 5 cylinder diesel engine
KZJ = 1KZ 3.0 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine
LJ = 2L 2.4 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine

LJ-78 is Light Duty Land Cruiser, with coils all round, others models above are Heavy Duty with leaf springs (newer Heavy Duty have front coils).

Avoid anything with an L in the engine code
ex. 2L-T or 3L

good luck finding a really clean 70 series there really hard to come by. Especially in a 4 door.
You should check out the HDJ81 I have for sale:)

basicly cyrus
any 4cyl 78 or 79 will have coils smaller diffs and gearbox and some head problems on some models .than the heavy dutys are the way to go for a tough rig

There's also the BJ7x, which has the 3.4L diesel. The B motors stop being sold in the mid eighties.

Some markets also got gas powered 70's, they are called FJ7x.

B series engine stopped in the 1989 - 1990 model years in Land Cruisers, though they were still in production for other models beyond those dates.

The only ones to really concern yourself with are the PZJ and the HZJ.

I would not willingly buy anything with an L series engine (ie: LJ78) and I would avoid the KZ series engines.

The 1HZ engine is going to be the best of the lot, and the 1PZ after that. The 1HZ will have a heavier duty transmission (H55F) and the PZ a lighter duty transmission.

Be totally sure to do your "due diligence" on the particular model you're after. As for auctions, look for something with a 4B grade and moderate mileage. Read the other importation threads that are on here and in the diesel forum.

I keep hearing the 1KZ is a sketchy engine too. Have people been having head problems too like the 2L-ts?
1HZ - 6cyl
1PZ - 5cyl
1KZ - 4cyl

isn't the 5cyl and the 4 cyls basically chopped versions of the 1hz?

The 1KZ is a different animal than the 1PZ and 1HZ.

Yes, the 13BT is a good little engine, but the 1HZ is another step up.

I spend alot of time at around 6000ft plus wheeling and out of the box a 13B-T is OK. A 1HZ is a nice smooth power plant and does surprising well at altitude even though it is N.A.

thanks for clearing that up for me guys.
i know this would be a bit biased since im in a 70 tech section but honestly how does the HZJ77HV compare with a HDJ81VX or how about HJ61VX?
-off road capability
-D.D. comfort
-reliability (i know its a toyota but im pretty sure some has flaws)
-parts availability in N. America
-after market support
-or which one is just simply more fun than the other
