Is it possible to access/link the Sat Nav device in the 100 series LC/lexus 470 into another device eg laptop. Anybody know where it is situated.

What sort of link are you interested in?

The signal from the GPS antenna? It will need to be NMEA compatible format for third party laptop programs to access. I am not sure what the native output format is for the stock unit.

The signal to the display unit? One would need to look into the video charactristics of the signal (resolution, refresh rates, color encoding etc) to use it. It may need to be converted to be useable.

The DVD data? That is a dual layer 4.7 GB DVD using propietary software for access which will need some form of hacking to access.

The Sat/Nav software itself? Again, the propietary software will need hacking.

The various compoents are scattered all over the vehicle, but most of the signals sort of come together behind the display in the dash and the center console area.

As a minimum I would like to interface the GPS with a laptop as the mapping data provided OEM is not brilliant.

I would also like ultimately integrate an iPOD with the system so that the Nav screen acts as the iPOD screen.

I assume that the DVD reader is specifically for the nav system, and has no other value.

For the GPS interface you mention, it would be easier just to buy your own stand-alone NMEA compatible antenna and plug it directly into your laptop. There are several good ones on the market. I happen to like this one:

For the iPod interface, check out

for a suitable plug in module.

Of course, you can go after the OEM installation in a big way, but that would be beyond me.

Thanks again for your thoughts. The purchase of another gps was always an option. It just annoys me that I have one already in the vehicle.

I had already checked out http://www.vaistech.com/home.html as it did seem an ideal solution. However they won't send out of the states, and more importantly they are not available. They seem to be having a techinical problem. Xmas is their anticipated time of manufacture.

Well you have to balance that annoyance with the thought of hacking into an (expensive) electrical system in your truck :)

Vaistech is a reasonably good product. If you can wait, that may be worth it. I am sure that there can be a workaround over not selling outside of the US.

PS: Although not directly related, please also look at :

I Agree!
