I'm planning on going up to catch the Samon-run next weekend. Current plan is to rough it, by driving up friday night after work, sleeping in the truck, fishing on Saturday, then driving back the next afternoon/evening. My brother in law may come, in which case, he'll have a pop-up, and may want to stay until Sunday (which I am game for). I'm going to try to find out where they are hitting (El Vado, Heron, Eagle Nest, Navajo, etc) in the next couple of days, and determine where to go.

All I know at this point is, I am leaving Friday and getting some Salmon next weekend.

Anyone interested in going up? I'll probably have at least a couple seats open if you don't want to drive.

This is the Salmon Snag? If you like Salmon, go for it. You can catch a lot of fish. I'm not much on Salmon myself though...

Ron, or anyone else heading up,
Velardechile here. I wont be able to go snaggin' but if anybody needs to stay up here in V-town Friday night, i got room. Velarde is a hour from El Vado and Heron, and 'bout a hour and forty-five to Eagle Nest.
Give me a hollar.. My wife makes one hell of a breakfast burrito!!

Yeah, its the Salmon snag (samon would be something from work, used to typing that). The limit is 12 per day , 24 in possession. I am hoping between putting a few hours in friday night, and Saturday, I can come close to the limit.

Looking at the fishing report, it appears that Navajo seems to be the place where the snagging is going best, so that will be the likely destination.

Thanks for the offer Tim.

salmon in new mexico ??

new to the state how about some more info there ..

thanks D

Land locked Kokanee salmon. I've only heard about people going after them during 'snagging' season. They congregate near the dams or rip rap of a few of the northern lakes like Navajo and El Vado. I'm sure you could get some info from Game and Fish's website or the weekly fishing report.

You can actually catch them year round. They are not native to New Mexico, and have been stocked here in the Northern lakes/streams since the early part of the century. When they mature, around 4/5 years old, they return to spawn (where they were dropped in the lake/stream), and soon after die. Since they are going to die anyway, snagging is allowed during this season. The daily limit is 12, with a total of 24 in possession. They average around 3lbs, with the state record just over 4lbs.

This is the first time I have gone to it... so i'll let you know how it goes.

How was snagging?

At the last minute, we decided to change to Eagle Nest, due to some reports of people catching limits in less then an hour. We arrived too late on Friday to fish, so setup camp at the first campsite in Cimmaron canyon. Next morning, we checked in with the local bait shop, and were told to try two places with the best success where at the lake, and a small stream flowing into the lake. We went to the lake first, where most people were. After an hour of nothing, we relocated to the stream. We spent about 3 hours at the stream, and I pulled 10, and my father in law pulled in 8. We could have continued on to the limit, but decided to call it quits. I have no doubt that if we arrived there at sun-up, we would have caught our limit rather fast. As it heated up, the Salmon were going to the deeper pools, and not as easy to see.

I have the salmon sitting in brine now, and will be smoking them tomorrow. If all goes well, we plan to make another trip up.. this time to fish two day so we can catch the full possession limit of 24 each.

Sounds like a great time. Your plan to smoke it sounds good too. Any chance we might get to sample some of that smoked salmon at the next HDC meeting?

I won't be making it to the meeting Friday. My daughter's school is having a fall festival, and we will be operating a few booths, and taking the kido's around for some fun.

I have some of the Salmon in the fridge. It didn't come out quite as expected. The dry brine I found online probably works well for larger sea salmon, but not so well on the little 2-3lbs. Way to much salt. Its not horrible, but definitely not great. I am thinking of slicing it up, and putting it all in the dehydrator to make Salmon Jerky.
